What Do You Use for a Mild Diaper Rash??

yep, we've got diaper rash. he's not bothered by it at all. but his poor bottom is very red and i can't leave it anymore. i've been covering it with vaseline at every change to keep the wetness off. i would love to leave him play nakie but he is soooo mobile that there'd be no way to keep any messes localized. what do you ladies like for rashes?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks so much mamas for all of your suggestions. unfortunately the cash flow situation is not so good right now so the purchase of product is going to have to wait. after a little research we are going to use olive oil after every change, give him baking soda baths, and i'm going to try to cut eggs from my diet. (i'd cut the dairy but i dont eat much at all.) and we're going to give him some nakey time every day to air it out. hopefully this helps him out some. also in researching i found some pics of REALLY bad rash and am thanking whatever's out there that its not even close to that bad.
anyway THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH.

Both of my children had horrible diaper rash to where their skin would almost bleed and it was so red you could barely touch them. I think most of it was the acid content in the stool, since I am my daycare were overly dilligent about changing them. 2 things for you, try using huggies supreme diapers and their extra soft newborn wipies ( I found my kids did great with pampers and then all of a sudden there was something in them that their little skin did not like.... also, I made my own butt cream as we spent mucho money on all the diaper rash ointments from pinxav to baby bottoms.... Here is what I do.... If the diaper rash is not severe, use vasoline and liquid maaloxx... scoop a hunk of vasoline into a throw away little roundy bowl thing and pour a smalll amount of maalox into it. Stir it with a plastic knife or whatever you want to throw away... until it is a creamy white consistency... you can always add more maalox or vasoline to get the right mix and then put a relatively good covering on with each change... It usually only took a couple changes to notice a difference and my kids skin was soothed immediately with the maalox in it.... if the rash becomes very irritated use A&D in your mixture instead of vasoline... smells a little medicine like but works like a charm. My kids are now 4 and 3 and will still ask for butt cream occasionally if their bottoms are hurting them... Hope this helps.. let me know

We have 15 children all together and we have always used desitin with crushed up Tums-the antacid- in it you crush up 2-3 tums and mix them into a dollop of the white desitin- I'll almost guarantee this to work. Also if you use wipes make sure they don't have alcohol in them look for ones that are hypo allergenic. Hope this works for you-diaper rash can be so painful for little ones.

N., your little guy might have diaper rash due to moisture, or he might have diaper rash due to food sensitivity or allergy (especially if you've started feeding him solids and his system is getting more and more new foods).

Nakey time is truly the best, fastest way to cure a moisture-related diaper rash - if it's really very red, I wouldn't mess w/ creams or ointments since that just prolongues the problem. Just do the quick method of giving him lots of "air time" by hanging out with him in one room for a few hours (like a room w/ no or few carpets, like the bathroom or kitchen) - accidents really aren't that horrible!!! And it's very temporary, just until the redness gets better. Just keep nearby:
1) a roll of toilet paper (if he poops, pick it up w/ this, though you can pretty much always tell when that's about to happen so you could even whisk him over the potty if you saw those signs - in other cultures, 7 months olds are regularly pottied in a gentle, no stress way, so you certainly won't harm him if you do this)
2) a few old rags (to clean up any pee since toilet paper isn't terribly absorbent)

For more information on great ways to give naked time and avoid lots of messes *and* avoid having a 3 or 4 yr old in diapers (babies & toddlers are quite capable of knowing when they have to go & where to go - they just need a little more help getting there):
http://www.viviente.com/2005/10/how_to_do_parttime_pottyt...
http://diaperfreebaby.org/
http://www.white-boucke.com/reviews/infantpottytraining.html

We started this with our daughter as soon as we found out about it (she was 8-9 months old at the time), and it was sooo much more enjoyable for all of us than diapering, plus no more diaper rash! Now we're doing this with our 2nd child, and we started from birth. He's almost 12 mos old now, and whoa, I'm so glad that I'm not dealing with poopy diapers (vast majority happens in the potty) and he's dry for many, many hours every day. Every baby is able to communicate their need to potty - use your son's diaper rash as a reason to give him some much needed nakey time and even give "elimination communication" a try. Babies are really amazing!

Hope his diaper rash clears up quickly!

If it doesn't clear even with lots of nakey time, it's time to investigate other causes like yeast infection or bacterial infection (your ped would need to diagnose this), or food sensitivity or allergy (http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/food-sensitivity.html).

mild diaper rash alot of things will work, i like the aveno diaper rash cream if there is just a little irritation, my oldest son had spells of severe diaper rash and the only thing that worked was this stuff called triple paste, it comes in a little blue & white tube and seems expensive but a little goes a long way. I first found it at walgreens then after looking for it a few other places i found it at walmart too. it is expensive so we only use when the rash starts to get bad and within a day it is clear.

Both of my boys have had pretty severe diaper rash. My oldest son had it so bad that he blistered. My Dr. prescribed nystatin cream as diaper rash can be a form of a yeast infection. This worked very well for him, but can be expensive. For my second son, this didn't seem to work. My sister had been told by her Dr. to use lotrimin cream which is an antifungal cream for jock itch, yuck, I know. There is generic brands for lotrimin (cheapest at Wal-mart, $1.99). You slather that on pretty thick and then cover with vaseline to shield skin from any other poop-poo or whatever. Use it at every diaper change until rash is gone. This worked awesome for my second guy. It usually works in about a day and a half if not less. It is much cheaper and you don't have to have a prescription.

Bouderoux Butt Paste..... you find it at Wal-mart. It is the best stuff that I have ever found for a rash. My daughter always had a diaper rash and we tried everything on the market--even the sprays. They either wouldn't work or they would make her little bottom burn. BBP worked immediately-- it didn't hurt and the rash cleared up that day. She's 2 now and if her bottom starts to bother her, she'll go and get the tube and bring it to you.

Good luck.

Vaseline keeps wetness away from the rash, but it doesn't let the area "breathe", and it doesn't have any active ingredients to treat the rash. I primarily used Desitin for mild rashes. I'm sure any zinc oxide-based ointment would work just as well. For more severe rashes I used Pinxalve (pronounced pink salve). It's available at drugstores, but sometimes they keep it behind the pharmacy counter. If you don't see it on the shelves, ask the pharmacist. It's good stuff.

Natahsa,

My old babysitter gave me a product called Resinol. It' a medicated cream-its a pinkish color. You have to actually ask the pharmacist for it as it doesnt sit out on the shelves. No prescription is necessary. It's a little pricy, but it works WONDERS on diaper rash. It isnt made for that, but it does work. It usually clears up the rash in less than 2 days. It does stain the diapers, so dont freak out like I did the first time I used it. I have had great luck with it. Good luck!!

Aveeno, Balmex, & Desitin are all ones that I have used and they, in my opinion, work the same and work well! I have been told that you can also use powdered dreft in warm water, set you childs behind in the water and it will clear it right up. But I have never tried it for myself. I have been lucky enough that when my daughter gets a diaper rash it's not bad and clears up in one application. Hope this helps you some!

One important question is how long has he had the rash and have you used the same diapers the entire time? My uncle's little boy had a diaper rash for about three months that was jsut red before they happened to get a different brand of diapers and the rash went away in a week or so. My six month old isn't very mobile yet, so I can still put a diaper under her and sit next to her ready to cover her up if need be during her "fresh air" time. If the creams aren't helping I would try a different brand of diapers. My children's Doctor told me once that my daughter's rash was a form of yeast infection and gave her a perscription.
Good Luck.

Resinol. My family has used this product for over 25 years (maybe longer) and it is great. Most minor rashes clear up overnight. It is hard to find so, you may have to ask your local pharmacy to order it for you. It cost about $8 for 3.5 oz but is well worth it as a little goes a long way. Since your son is very young, I would ask his Dr. about using it. We have always used it on babies this young but, I come from a family full of nurses that found something that worked and stuck with it.

For day to day, I use good old fashioned A&D ointment. I buy the big tub and it lasts forever. When a rash does break out, I either use Desitin overnight formula (in the purple box) or Aveeno diaper rash cream.

There's another paste they sell at Walgreens. I can't remember the name of it at the moment, but it's $8.99 for a tiny blue & white tube. I use that for the extreme cases.

Alot of people will reccomend Boudreaux's Butt Paste, but it did nothing to help clear my daughter's rash and I tossed the tube.

Good luck. I always feel terrible when my daughter gets a diaper rash and she cries during the changes.

Hi N.- I've found that aquaphor works wonderfully or even A&D. They aren't overly expensive and have no scents to them so there is no further irritation. Hope I could be of some help!
