What Do You Do with Your Kids Old Clothes?

I always donate them, either to the women with children homeless shelter or the local domestic violence safe house. I would rather know that someone who really needs them is using them then worry about making 1% of the money back I paid for them. I also buy brand new items to add to the donations, things like socks and underwear and feminine hygiene products.

Depends. For years we donated them because it was easiest and we were able to help others out. My husband has been out of work for 8 months now, so we sell everything we can. $50 will pay for the internet so he can still job hunt.

We sell mostly on the FB yard sale sites, there are literally 25 in my "small" community.

I usually pass them along to friends or donate them to goodwill. It's too much work to try to make money off of them. Most of my kids old stuff are from target and old navy and not worth too much anyway (individually - collectively they cost me a fortune!).

I donate them, get a receipt and write their value off my taxes.

Trash the messed up stuff. I have 3 kids with a lot of similar tastes (yes even from the boys to my girl). I hand things down through the 3. Once my youngest outgrows them they go to my niece. From there, some of it goes to some other family, some gets trashed and some..well..it goes to the spare room at my parents house right now. It is a whole lot of work to do a yard sale and I really don't think you get enough to really justify the time involved. I have brought some things here and there to resale shops but they give so very little and turn away a lot of perfectly good clothing yet I see stained and faded clothing on their racks so it always seems so arbitrary.
Probably going to sort through and donate it all.

If I know someone close that could benefit from them I'll pass them along. I've also consigned at the Just Between Friends sale & made decent money. It really wasn't a ton of work; just make sure everything is clean, hang it up & then print & pin the tags.If I'll garage sale them too if I'm close to having a garage sale but I don't tend to hang on to them for a long time. Another of my favorite things is to swap using peace.love.swap. I started attending them when I lived in Colorado, started my own swaps through them when I lived in Virginia, & since my life is a bit crazy now that we've moved yet again I'm not holding swaps but will again once things settle down. I donate to a local church or give to friends.

A few select really nice pieces (usually dresses from my daughter) I find someone I know at school with a girl a few years younger and pass them along (most of them are only worn a handful of times). The rest I donate to charity - usually one the picks up at my house and leaves a tax receipt behind.

If we had family up here I'd probably pass more along, but most of it isn't worth the bother or expense of shipping. I have a bag full of stuff to eBay (items with tags still attached), but after 3 years or so I still haven't gotten around to it.

I usually sell them. I will often put an add on a facebook selling site and people will come by and buy them for $1 or $2 an item. I have had people purchase boxes of clothes at a time so it adds up to $50 or $100 for stuff I was going to give away. I will also have a yard sale and then donate the rest.

I donate. My first go to is our local women's shelter. The clothes are appreciated and used. My second go to is a Goodwill so they can sell them in their stores.

I have good quality clothing that has either been out grown or we just don't like for some reason or another.

My time = $$$. The tax benefit of donating far outweighs the time consumed with a garage sale and the risk of someone casing out my house or the bother of a consignment store.

You won't get anywhere near what you paid for the items, even with tags still on and never used.

I suppose bottom line is how much is your time worth!!

I donate them, either to my brother for my nephew or to a local charity. It is probably possible to make a little bit of cash selling kids clothes, but I would rather that someone else use them.

I have a huge family, so they always get passed on to someone. :)

I've sold baby & toddler clothes on eBay with good results, but the bigger the clothing the more specific things have to be in terms of desirability. I sell on eBay as a job. I have clients and make a commission on the sales. I end up rejecting more clothing than I accept. Some things are perfectly nice, but won't sell well online. They are better off at a yard sale or consignment shop.

I do have a friend in another state that does nothing but secondhand clothing and does well with it, but she scours local yard sales and thrift shops full time to find vintage, popular, and unique items.

(Gamma's friend's eBay experiences are suspect, imo. It is true that you will not get appraised value for most used jewelry, as the bulk of buyers are usually interested in the metal and won't pay above market for the scrap price. A jeweler's appraisal is for insurance purposes, and not resale value. It is also possible to encounter nutty potential bidders, however, it is not possible for a member to report a seller for refusing to accept a low-ball price. If the seller's account was restricted there was another reason. Additionally, opening a new account because one has been restricted is not allowed. If the friend actually spends 18 hours managing a single item, they should probably stay off eBay entirely.)

Used clothes don't make you money. They might give you penny's on the dollar.

I have a friend who only buys name brands for her kids. When they outgrow something she sells it on Ebay. She might spend 18 hours on one item with taking pictures, uploading the pictures, writing the ad, posting them, dealing with everyone who wants to see a picture from this angle or see the inseam seam or to see the insides of each pant leg at the hem to see how worn they are, or to argue with someone who wants to buy a pair of pants you have listed for $2 and they want them for $.50 and no shipping and handling.

Seriously, she's had gold and diamond bracelets on there with certifications along with the official insurance quotes and had them on sale for less than half. One bracelet was certified to be worth $850 and she had it for sale for $300. She only sold it because her house payment was overdue due to financial aid coming in late.

This one guy offered her $75 for it. It was emeralds and sapphires set in platinum and gold. Gorgeous. She told him no but if he really wanted it he could buy it for $300 because that was her bottom dollar. He continued to send her messages requesting she come down on the price.

He turned her in for not selling it to him at the lower cost and she got in trouble with Ebay. They set her limit of items back to a lower amount because of a complaint they considered valid....to buy something that had a guaranteed value of $850. He wanted it for 90% off. There was no way she was going to let this go for a penny less than $300. She took it off and he wrote nasty messages to her again and again wanting that bracelet for less. She had to close that account.

So I suggest that if you do sell their clothes that you simply find a local consignment store and take in the limit amount and see what they take. Because they might not take half of it. I've taken in things I just bought there a few months before and they outgrew it. Then when I brought it back in the same shape it was in when "I" bought it they say it's too out of date and it won't sell...so even then it's iffy.

Otherwise just save yourself a lot of time and effort and give them away to someone younger than your kids. Pass them around.

way too much work for me. i've done a couple of yard sales, and spent days before organizing and pricing and given up my entire weekend to make $30.

I have a cousin with a little girl who gets my daughter's old clothes, except for the ones that are college specific for the school my husband and I went to, because they are fans of a rival college, so those clothes go to friends of mine who went to school with me. My son's clothes are mostly my sister's sons old clothes so they go back to her. She's not sure if she's done having babies yet or not.

I give them to friends, neighbors, friends of neighbors, etc.

So many charities don't even sell some of the clothes they get - many sell them to companies who make rags and towels out of them. I would rather know another kid is getting to wear them, so even though I don't make money or get a tax write off, I give them to people who I know have kids to wear them. It's kind-of a sentimental thing, I guess.

I give the gently worn clothes and shoes to my friends with kids younger than mine. Otherwise, I donate. It's just too much work to consign or sell.

When my son was much younger and didn't wear things for long, we would save up the nice ones and take them to trade at an exchange shop. (Not consignment.) Even that got to be a hassle with waiting to have stuff looked at and some businesses not being clear about posting trade limitations, etc.

Now we just pass along the clothes in good condition. Sometimes it's to a neighbor family which has a little guy now; sometimes it's donated to the women's transition/shelter. And I never, ever give 'grubbies' to be donated... I'd rather ask a friend if their child needs playclothes or use them for rags.

The $ stuff like our snowsuits (we tend to buy good ones where it gets cold here) I hold on to until I know someone who needs them. Someone in the family will eventually fit it or a friend's child or someone in need.

Same with skates and gear - hockey gear etc.

For what I've made selling on consignment or at yard sales, not worth it. I would much prefer to give it to someone or donate to salvation army.

The pretty formal type dresses or dress clothes for boys (just worn to recitals etc.) - I always buy really classic styles and nothing too trendy - then pass on too.

I used to years ago buy on Ebay. You could probably make more there than consignment or yard sales .. but I think it has to be like new condition. I only tended to deal with about 4 sellers who had great reputations and always sold super stuff.

If they were still wearable, I donated them to the battered women's shelter. Otherwise, I threw them away.

We live in a rural community so I give my kids clothes to the school. They have a lot of need. Helps me to know the clothes go to someone in need and helps my community.

When we moved I had a sale inside the house. I had a lot of clothing and small household items. I made very little money; maybe $100 to $ 150. I don't think having the sale was worth it. People argued about prices even after I said price is not negotiatable. One couple were rude when I said what they had was not part of the sale.

Sorting and pricing took 3 of us a couple of days. Then we had 3-4 of us walking around. Most people were pleasant. I was exhausted by the end of the day.

Selling just baby clothes would be much easier but you'll have to sell them at $1-3 each. Most will be $2. This is even if they're name brands and in good condition. I see mom's taking baby clothes to a resale shop. The shop will take most and they pay you upfront earning about the same as you would in a yard sale with less work.

I suggest selling on the Internet is a lot of work unless you're already set up to do it.

If I needed the money I would take the clothes to a resale shop. As it is, I donate them and use a higher value for taxes. My daughter exchanges or gives clothes with friends.

Consignment and or donation. Yard sales are too much fuss.

unless the clothes are top brands.. they wont sell for much.. I have done ebay for Gymboree... I have sold some clothing in lots on craigslist.. but mostly I give away..to friends...

I donate to The Salvation Army (or their woman's shelter) or any or our local churches.

I only sell clothes that are dress up costumes (princess dresses or old Halloween stuff), and toys in very good condition.

Pass them around or donate. I rarely sell them. Usually not worth the hassle. I'm better off donating them for a charitable tax donation than I am having a yard sale.

I pass them along either to friends and family or on freecycle. I also pass on coats to the church or school because I know they'll ask for them every year.

I give mys sons clothes to friends who have boys that are younger then him. He had some really nice clothes, and in good condition.

If I really needed the money, I'd do consignment or online yard sale. I've seen people selling bags of clothes on craigslist, "Size 6 girls" for $1-2 an item. That wouldn't be time consuming. But as of right now, I'm a very blessed gal, and I'd rather just give to those in need. It's the least I can do.

Once my two kids have gone through the clothes, I either give them to friends or donate them to Goodwill. Friends who have a single child the same gender of my kids really appreciate getting the clothes especially because the kids outgrow them so quickly.
