The Chinese calendar didn't work for me. I have two boys, and they both were supposed to be girls, according to the calendar.

Gosh...by the time we got to our 7th IVF cycle, we didn't care what the gender of the baby might be. We were just thankful that it finally worked. If you "only want a boy," then please don't try all the wives tales. I'd hate for a third daughter to feel your disappointment that she wasn't a boy. That's a huge, unfair burden for a child to carry.

The only way to be certain you have a boy is like someone said: do IVF. You'll also have to do PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) to determine the gender of the embryos. Now, as PGD implies, it is to determine the gender to eliminate having a child with a serious or deadly chromosomal disorder...not simply to have the gender child you desire. It's not fun to go through the process, nor is it cheap. Many doctors also won't do it if that is the only reason for it. I guess, as one who spent a lot of money, years and tears just trying to have children, people who aren't thankful that they can simply have them the "old fashioned way" really strike a nerve with me.

Again, the high-tech way is the only way to be certain. If you won't hold it against another girl if that's what you end up with, go the wive's tale route...sure is less painful and doesn't cost you a penny. Good luck to you.

Pray! I followed all of the "rules" to conceive a girl with our second one, and was SHOCKED to learn we were having another boy! As much as we don't want to face it, we truly have no control over it. It doesn't hurt to try though. Good luck!

Hi L.,
I have not tried this myself but I have heard of taking
Geritol (high potency vitamins). In your case since you want a boy, your husband needs to take them at least a month before you try to conceive. Again, I cannot vouch for this personally, but it's one option I heard of and well, they are just vitamins so I don't think it can hurt any. These vitamins are available at any pharmacy as far as I know. Just another idea. Good luck!!

Well I am replying because my husband and I tried both times for boys and got 2 boys! We followed every bit of advice we came across and it worked! (or it was a total coincidence?? We can never be sure!)Anyway, the main thing is you need to know when you are ovulating, as you need to have sex as close to ovulation as possible for a boy. The boy sperms swim faster AND die off faster so if you want a boy you want to get those sperms in there right when the egg comes out. You also want deep penetration (from behind is recommended) so that the boy sperms have a chance to be as close to the egg as possible and swim in there real fast before they die off or before any girl sperms get a chance to get in there. I remember reading that it is easier to try for a boy than a girl just because it is harder to time it just right for a girl, so you have that on your side! The only way that I used to tell when I was ovulating was: paying attention to my "cervical mucous" (aka discharge - sorry, gross). I never noticed it before that time, but it changes in consistency, appearance and amount throughout your cycle. I was easily able to tell when I would ovulate based on that alone. Here is a good link I found for you that explains what to look for really well. Scroll down to Cervical Mucous Monitoring: http://www.estronaut.com/a/ovulation_fertility.htm
Good luck! Hope it works for you. I feel it did for me! :-)JL

I have 4 daughters and read some books on this topic, I can't remember the name though. There are doctors that do this and guarantee a boy, if you're husband is willing, mine was not willing to do anything that seemed not natural. Anyway, I'd recommend paying the $$ and going to a doctor that specializes in gender selection. Not that I'm complaining about my 4 wonderful daughters, but honestly, I wouldn't recommend having 4, it's a handful!!

I have not had experience in this area, but I have done a ton or reading on the subject. The book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility discusses how to select the gender of your child by timing your intercourse with your temperature and with your cervical fluid (egg white).

There is a chinese calender that has been used or centuries. look on line and once you print it out ask everyone you know who has a new baby when they baby was conceived and how old the mom was at time of conception. My friend tried it and it worked for them. Supposedly a 99% accuracy. Good luck and have fun.

Be as absolutely healthy as you can be. The right amount of sleep, food, water, exercise. This helps your body support a boy baby more naturally.
Good luck!

Hi, L.,

I agree with the writers who said that only medical intervention, PGD, could help a couple select the sex of offspring and the other "methods" are based on old wives' tales. You may hear people say, "Well, it (whatever scientifically unsupported "method" worked for me or someone I know)," but there is a 50-50 chance of guessing right! Besides, they don't tell you about all the cases in which they or someone they know guessed wrong!

I have two boys and, at 43, don't plan to have any more, although I would have liked to have had a girl. My first child was conceived through Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), which is similar to IVF. I did not produce enough embryos of enough cells to get PGD. Even if I had, I would not have elected PGD because it was expensive ($5,000) without an absolute guarantee regarding the sex of the child. Beside after struggling with infertility and going through many rounds of invasive fertility treatment as well as trying the old-fashioned way, I was just grateful to have a child!

Good luck,
Lynne E

This will sound funny but I heard from a friend that they ate seafood and always pionted north during sex. I don't vouch for this but I do know there is a book about it. I saw the book and my friend had a boy. Good luck.

Ask your OB about microsort - It's a medical procedure which gives you very good odds for the chosen sex - I believe 95% if you want a girl or 85-90% if you want a boy. Talk to your doctor about it. Any other method is really just luck.
