Went to the doctor today and confirmed a UTI, started antibiotics. Was told to avoid intercourse for several days; except we are TTC and cervical fluid appears to be indicating ovulation is about to occur. I have long cycles, often with my body making multiple attempts at ovulation before it actually occurs (patches of fertile quality cervical fluid without a subsequent rise in basal temp), but I don't really want to "skip" this month of trying. Ironically, I think this was brought on in part by the attempts to conceive, combined with increased bike riding (for exercise) and swimming (summer fun). Anyway, anyone out there had a similar situation and ignored the doctor's advise? Just curious. Obviously my health comes first, but if it's just a matter of "discomfort" (which is what the NP said), I can get over that! Thanks!
Best advice I ever got regarding UTI's (when I was going through a spell of O. after another) is to pee before AND after you have sex. And since you're already on meds.....I'd go for it!
Maybe before ignoring the doctors advice, you should ask him/her why you have to avoid sex. Unless the people on here have medical degrees and know for sure that it is only to avoid discomfort, I would call the physician and explain your situation and see what they say.

Intercourse can be a contributing factor in developing a UTI, since bacteria can be "pushed" up the urethra into the bladder, where they cause the infection - once you are on antibiotics, I wouldn't worry about that factor, since you ALREADY have bacteria where they don't belong.
You should however make it a habit to urinate after having intercourse, and it will cut down on your chances of infection.

If the pain and discomfort is gone, I would. Take lots of Vit C and cranberry extract.

I would wait. I ended up in the hospital with a bad UTI and it was awful. Your health is the main concern. IMO, I would not want to risk making things worse - plus it might be painful.

Ask your doctor, he/she is the best person to answer your question. In your place, I would wait until my problem is gone. I would probably skip a month of trying instead of having the UTI worse and having to skip more than a month to conceive because of more pain and discomfort. Does it make sense?

Having sex with a UTI can increase the bacteria, worsen the symptoms and prolong the recovery time. You need to give the antibiotics at least a few days to work.
I've had sex with a UTI, very unpleasant and after sex when I finally had to urinate I thought I would die, the pain was intense. Can't you wait to try next month? Plus do you want to look back at the time of conception and remember how bad it felt? IMO
You can still try M.. The doctor was probably mostly concerned about your comfort. Be sure to empty your bladder before and after and of course wash up afterwards.
After being very prone to UTI, those processes have helped me avoid getting them. Also, if you're interested, you can get d-mannose which is the ingredient from cranberries that helps keep any bacteria from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract. You can get it at the health-food store or online as a powder or in capsules. It will help end an infection more quickly and help you avoid getting them in the future. If anyone wants to use cranberry juice it's a good idea to get the brands that are 100% juice. The ones with too much sugar (regular sugar) can feed the bacteria and inflame the issue.

I think you can. :-) Go for it! My only concern would be the medicine's side effects (possibly causing dryness?) and/or residue (something you may not want "onboard" when baby is conceived????) Some antibiotics are not to worry about, others maybe. I really honestly don't know which are okay though.
Yes, I notice that frequent (or long or 'enthusiastic') sex can trigger UTI's - so whenever I feel like this might be a trigger, I immediately take an aspirin or alka-seltzer and usually that is enough to prevent a full blown UTI. (I got them all the time between our wedding and pregnancy, and after childbirth, it seems I "feel" the UTI's much more than I actually get the UTI's.)
I agree with Denise, I would go for it...especially since you are already on antibiotics.
The more irritated you are then the longer it is going to take to get rid of the infection. While I know you are trying to get pg, this is not time. Give you body a chance to heal and also you can transfer the infection to your partner which could also delay it by you keep giving it back and forth.
A lot of women get UTI because of sex and not cleaning or peeing immediately afterwords. This is most likely why he is telling you to avoid. That is one of the most common reasons for women to get UTI's
can i ask what is an UTI? my advice will be just go for it what with the doctors say!!!! hopefully it the days ahead you will be able to have sex with your partner!!! its a matter of time, so just relax and wait!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!
