I have a two week old son who hardly ever burps after feeding! I wouldn't be too worried except it seems that instead of burping he gets really painful gas. Does ANYONE have any tips or advice? Could I just not be burping him long enough? I feel so bad for him!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all SO much! All of your tips have been VERY helpful... After getting only about an hour of sleep last night we decided to try the milacon, we had only given him one dose and the poor guy had an allergic reaction... SO that is out of the question now! He is still fussy but I have been trying all of the different burping methods and they seem to give him some relief! I can't say thank you all enough! He just fell asleep so I guess I should be getting off of this computer to get some sleep too! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! :)

Update AGAIN! : we bought some Dr. Brown's bottles and they seem to help a TON as well! I would HIGHLY recommend these bottles to ANYONE whose little ones have tummy problems!

Maybe try patting him a harder not too hard obviously but maybe just a lil harder than what you have been. Either that or maybe if you notice he is having trouble burping try rubbing his tummy to help move the gas out. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me. My lil guy is now 3 but maybe I can help you. My e-mail address is ____@____.com. I'm 25 but was 22 when I had my lil guy so I know how it feels.

Hi there! I have a 5 year old and an 8 year old. You might try a room temperature bottle of 7up that has been slightly de-carbonated or you may try some peppermint water. In order to get peppermint water just take the peppermints you get from Sonic for instance and put one in a bottle and gently shake it until the water turns slightly pink. Probably only about an ounce or so of either kind of bottle because of his age. I am 37 and when I was a baby I had colic. My parents fed me sugar water or 7up. It worked then. There is also Mylicon drops that are sold in your local Wal-Mart or Walgreen's that are for babies that have gas which causes colic. I wish you the best.........H. R in Missouri

are you breastfeeding? b/c if you are they tend not to burp as much as with bottles. but if your bottle feeding, then I'd try a different bottle.

I know this might sound silly but are you patting his back hard enough? I know sometimes we tend to view our little babies as fragile when they actually are quite sturdy. It may be that your back thumps need to be more firm?? Just a thought. Good luck.

You may want to try burping longer, my daughter sometimes took a while, but you may also consider whether you are burping frequently enough, sometimes it's easier for them to get out a few small burps frequently, than a big one at the end of the meal.

Additionally, if you're not using a sleep positioner, you might try, I found that the slight elevation helped her get some of the gas out as a burp while she was sleeping. At that age, he'll tend to go to sleep after meals, but if you sit in the rocking chair or walk around with him to keep him upright before putting him down, that may help as well.

All things being said, you may discuss mylicon gas drops with your doctor, or a change in formula/bottle. After we stopped breastfeeding, we did really well with breastflow bottles by the First Years.

Have you tried different burping positions?

1. On your shoulder and pat his back. Might even want to try his lower back.
2. Sit him on your lap with one hand holding his belly, the other patting his back.
3. Lay him over your legs, stomach down, and pat his back.
4. You can also lay him down on his back, take his legs and make them bend back and forth into his tummy, like he's riding a bicycle.

I hope those make sense.

I burped my daughter for maybe 2-5 minutes after each nursing session. Sometimes I would stop on the middle of nursing and burp her if she started to get restless while nursing.

1st off- Congratulations!!! I had my 1st baby- a boy too- this past year so I know what a beautiful, miraculous and scary time you are having. I had this same problem but unfortunately don't have a great answer for you. While I was still in the hospital, the nurses commented that my little man was hard to burp. His Dr. later mentioned the same thing. Your little guy might just be hard to burp too. The only thing I might suggest when you are trying to burp him is to hold him up really high on your shoulder so his little tummy is pressed tight against your shoulder blade. It will mean that half of his little body is above your shoulder, but that was suggested to us and worked sometimes (not always though). Mine is now 9 months old (today!) and he eventually just started burping on his own time. To this day, he won't burp when I try to burp him, just when he decides to. But, now that he's older, it works ok. Best of luck!

p.s. I know you didn't ask advice specifically on this issue but you mentioned it: You will cry your eyes out and feel so guilty right before you go back to work but it WILL be OK once you get back in the swing of things. I took 12 weeks off on maternity leave and have now been back to work since 7-31. Just know that you will survive those 1st couple of weeks- I promise!!! I just thought I would throw that out there for you since I know from my own experience that having that dread loom over you is so tough!

I would try burping him more frequently during feeding. My son had the same problem, I now burp him every couple of minutes during his feeding. He didnt like it at first, but now he is used to it. It made a HUGE difference.
