Tipping Movers and Packers??

I was in the moving industry for 13 years. Yes, people typically tip. The cost of a move may seem very expensive, but most of the guys doing the hard labor do not make very much at all. The moving industry is far more complicated than people believe it to be. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. Anyway, the average customer would buy lunch and tip maybe $15-$30 per guy depending on the size of the home and number of movers. If people were really happy they would tip more, but remember if you are moving interstate you will also have a crew at destination to consider. If it is a local move and happening all the same day then I would wait until delivery to assess the situation... Maybe even hint to the driver that you will handle the tip on the other end.

Hi there...we have always tipped movers if they did a good job. Remember the people actually moving or packing you do not get paid the high amount, I am sure they are making minimum wage...if that. Tipping is the right thing to do.

We have moved with movers 4 times and honestly, never thought about tipping them. That sounds horrible, it just never crossed our minds. We do usually buy their lunch and always have water and gatorade in a cooler for them. If we ever move again, we'll have to think about the tipping thing, but we've always moved with company moves, so just never thought about tipping.
As far as the packers, we've never tipped, again never thought about it, but really watch what they're doing. Unfortunately, even if you think they're doing a good job, you don't really know until you get moved and unpacked to find out what got damaged on the way. I've had things broken because of people being lazy and not thinking...mirrors that didn't get packed in boxes, furniture not being taken apart when it could and should have been.

I have always tipped my movers at least $25 each- but the last time I moved was about 5 years ago. So, I would probably tip more than that now.
I also try to let them know in a not so obvious way that I do have a tip for them (before they start moving my stuff).

Our last move was 7 yrs ago and we tipped plus brought them lunch.

Before the guys started, I told them how picky my hubby is with our things and indicated if he was happy that they would be happy.

That worked for me and we got a good job.

I've tipped when I thought the movers went above and beyond.

Didn't tip when a mover didn't bring the right size truck to move me in one trip from Dallas to Frisco (though we did by lunch). I had to pay for the extra two hours intransit.

The tip amount I would say, depends on how much stuff you have, how far you are going and the type of mover. My husband works for a larger moving co. and it's always a plus when he gets tipped even $20. At least it shows that the customer realizes that it's not an easy job. I'm a horrible tipper and my husband gets very mad at me. I have gotten better since we've been married, just because I know what he has to go through with his job. Regardless of what your paying the moving company to move you, the guy who is physically handling your "life" is not getting every dime that you pay for the move. There's always someone above them taking their cut off the top before anyone else gets paid. Good luck with the move!

I just had movers in two states and my dad specifically said he had never tipped a mover in his life... I will say, though, when I signed the credit card slip, there was a space for tip, so maybe the times have changed since my dad did his moving... I didn't tip though--at $100 per hour, I think they are earning enough!! I hope this is helpful for you!
