I am so sorry that you are going through this... my youngest who is 3 now - had HORRIABLE diaper rashes, so blood red - I can relate... use corn starch, yes the stuff you cook with! I had a babysitter tell me this when Shawn's botton was almost bleeding b/c of diaper rash. When they poop, they scream when you try to clean it they scream louder... seriously - the plain 'ol corn starch worked wonders. I finally put some in a toss and go tupperware boul and used it everyday! Good luck!!!

Hey, my son use to get really raw like that as well. The only thing that I found that really helped him was the A&D ointment(don't know if thats how you spell it). It worked really good. After usin it may 2 or 3 times you could really tell a difference. After about the second time he really didn't scream anymore.

I agree, the diahrrea is probably a side effect of the omnicef - as well as the yeast infection. If it is yeast it will start to improve quickly with an anti-fungal ointment. You can read about treating yeast in the diaper area at:

http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/baby/babyills/babyrash/1...

or get her in to have the doctor look at it.

My daughter had an allergic reaction to omnicef the very first time she took it (at 9 months old)and she broke out from head to toe in red spots - she looked like she had polka dots! The spots didn't seem to bother her at all - so I don't think they were itchy or painful.

Hope this helps.

R., have you ever thought of doing something else to help the ear infections than giving her drugs?? I know a lot of people are not into seeing chiropractors and if they are, they'll do it for themselves but not for their kids. My husband is a chiropractor and has helped many kids/babies with ear infections with regular adjustments. He has been very successful with this even when doctors have wanted to do surgery. And what I mean about regular adjustments could be MAYBE 1 or 2 times a week at first, but for healthy regular adjustments, maybe once a month. We have two healthy kids, 1 & 2 years old, that he adjusts maybe once or every other month. We have never had a problem with ear infections.

hey there, my son kyle has had a diaper rash, not sure if he was on medicine but its very possible, and his yeast infection was so bad that when i wiped his butt, the sores would bleed, like blood would be on the wipe. use LOTRIMIN for athletes foot, its kinda expensive for a small tube but i keep it on hand just in case of that again. the dr. told me that yeast infections comne form warm damp places.. whats better than a diaper right? well guess thats all i can suggest, oh and dont use diaper rash cream, they SCREAM because it burns... a warm bath may help too.

Yogrut is great for yeast infections. You can feed it to her or if it is bad enough you can get plain yogrut and put it on her bottom. With a diaber rash nothing is better for speeding up healing than good ol' fresh air. Let her bottom get plenty of fresh air and it will heal fast. All antibiotics have the possible side effect of diahrea so that could have cause a diaper rash. They can also cause yeast infections by killing off the good bacteria that keep the yeast in check. So it is very likely that it is not an allergic reaction, just a typical side effect.

Not sure if this will help. A friend told me what her pediatrician told her to use. Mix Maalox and Zinc Oxide (what most diaper cremes are made of). Don't add too much Maalox because you want it to be a paste consistency rather than runny. You put it on at night time and after a day or two, the rash should be almost completely gone. She swears by this since she had tried everything on the market with her son the time he had a severe rash. This was the only thing that cleared it up. Hope this helps!

My son is allergic to penecillin as well and is perscribed omnicef for everything. We had this same problem. Eating yogurt helps a lot with the diareah. His doctor prescribed athletes foot cream to clear up the yeast infection (It's called Nystatin cream to be specific). She said that it is not a different kind from the kind that the drug stores sell over the counter, so I just made sure I had a tube on hand before I started giving omnicef to him. I also dried his bottom with a hair dryer after I took his dirty diaper off and cleaned him up. Sometimes we were able to avoid the yeast infection by keeping him totally dry. I used the cloth diapers (only when on medicine) with the inserts from Food Lion that say you can use a diaper twice...they're just diaper cores for lack of a better word and these seemed to help as well. I hope this helps you and your little daughter!

Our Pediatrician back in Florida gave us a great recipe for diaper rash cream.
Mix:
1.Maalox (not mint or any flavor of acid ie orange)
2.Caldesene Powder (pink bottle)
3.1% Cortizone (cortizone10)
You really have to blend together, it won't just mix. I put a little liquid then the powder together and once they mix I add the cortizone. It works really well and the powder works great alone when your child has a little redness. You can buy generic of the maalox and cortizone but the powder needs to be that brand. It is worth the money for the powder. Good Luck! Hope your daughter heals soon, I know that can be so sad and rough!

My daughter is allergic to most antibotics. i learned early to make sure i had some nastatin cream at all times. It works wonders if you already didnt know. If you dont mind me asking what doctor do you take her too? Most doctors i know whould have not given it her again unless they had no other choice. For the diahrea all you can really give her is pedilyte, they really wont write a prescription for anything else for a baby.

My daughter had 3 nasty ear infection in her first 12 months. First thing I can tell you is "do not" lay the baby down with a bottle proped for feeding. When your baby is done feeding, keep her/him in an upright position for at least one half hour. The reason for this is because the ear canal holds fluid from the baby during feeding. As the child lays down, the fluid settles thus causing an ear infection. If this is not the cause, discuss with the pediatrician if a referral to EENT is suitable. Now, to address the rash. Each time my daughter was on antibiotics, she developed a horrid yeast infection. I bought over the counter lotrimin AF per the pediatrician. It was gone in 2 days. I saw major improvement in one application. Some more immediate holistic approaches you can take is to lay the baby down on top of the diaper, do not close it. If it's warm enough, turn a fan on a light breeze. It will help cool the area down. Lightly place wet regular tea bags over the rash for approx. 15 minutes. Tea leaves contain tanic acid that help speed healing of localized skin irritation. It will not hurt the baby. DO NOT USE BABY WIPES as they contain alcohol that will burn, further irritate the area. Cleanse with gentle soap and wash cloth between diaper changes. Some other useful info I've found is once the infection is cleared, the best thing I've found that does not burn between diaper changes is Butt Paste. It's a bit more expensive, but works a heck of a lot better at keeping the baby comfortable and irritation free.

I would treat your daughter with a miconazole cream on the affected area, and give her yobaby yogurt from stoneyfield farm. It will put back the good digestive bacteria to fight the yeast. You can get the cream where you get adult yeast treatment. I would also look into alternative treatments because too many antibiotics will make your daughter less resistant to worse bacterias. I feel you pain though, my twins got bad yeast infections, but the cream and yogurt brought relief in about a day.

Ask the doctor for another antibiotic. When my 2 year old was a baby she had ear infections and had bad reactions from Omnicef and I told the doc he had to prescribe something different so, he did. It looks like you got plenty of advice about the diaper rash/yeast infection so, I won't give anymore. Has the doctor said anything about your daughter getting tubes in her ears? My daughter got them when she was 10 mos. old and hasn't had another ear infection since.

R., this very well could be a yeast infection. You know antibiotics can cause them for women, but it can in little girls too. Did your daughter's doctor examine her and make that diagnosis, or did he just tell you over the phone that it was a possibility? If he examined her, he should have provided a medicine that would clear this up in just a couple of days. If not, take her in as soon as possible! If the doc can't see her for a few days, I suggest the emergency room. I just had a yeast infection myself, and I know how terribly painful and miserable it can be. I tried to treat it myself for over a week, but it just kept getting worse to the point that I actually started bleeding from being so raw. I finally saw my doctor, she gave me a prescription for a pill that I took that afternoon, and by the next day it was almost gone. One more pill did the trick for good. I know your baby can't take pills, but my point is that the doctor can prescribe medications that are much more effictive and work much more quickly than OTC meds. The sooner you get this treated, the better for your daughter. She's probably in terrible discomfort right now.

p.s. - I know you are concerned that this may be an allergic reaction rather than a yeast infection because of the diarhea, but they could be unrelated. The diarhea may be a side effect of the Omnicef, and the other symptoms from the yeast infection, which is another side effect itself. Either way, the doctor can run a test to diagnose the yeast infection for sure.

Hi R.,

I haven't had that reaction from Omnicef, but thought I would let you know that Bag Balm, in a green tin can at WalMart, may help her bottom. I used it for yeast infection on my girls as well. It is in the pet section at my Walmart, but I have had to ask the Pharmacist for it at other locations.

Don't worry that the can says it's used for animals. IT IS THE BEST red bottom treatment I have EVER encountered! I worked in a daycare a long time ago and a mother had it for her daughter who always had diaper rash when she eliminated. We would use that on her bottom and she would clear up in between diaper changes. I give it for baby gifts with RX instructions!!

Best of Luck!!

our daughters did the same thing when on omnicef, our doctor said to try to get them to drink yogurt drinks daily (b/c this coats their digestive tract b/c the rash/yeast infection is inside too, and has yogurt cultures that help ward off the yeast infection) and to mix up a homeade diaper rash cream (equal parts A&D ointment, cortaid and vagisil cream). The cream has always done the trick for us.

hello!

i completely sympothize this this problem. yeast infections are common with this drug. i always made sure my kids ate lots of yougart when they were on omnicef or any antibioticas a preventative. it is supposed to help with the yeast infections. i also had a son who would have horrible diaper rash from certain sugars. (he could never eat those big sugary cupcakes as a baby...his first birthday was painful!) i did not find butt-paste until we were almost finished with diapers, but i HIGHLY recommend it. along with an aveeno bath. it is great stuff and very soothing to those little sore butts! bless her heart! i hope this was helpful.

So sorry that your baby is having these complications. My daughter has terrible yeast infections as a infant and young child. I know that this sounds crazy and you may laugh at me for this, but IT WORKS BETTER THAN DIAPER CREAMS!!!! Go to the pet department of wal-mart/Target/etc and get Bag Balm. It comes in a green tin and has a picture of a cow on it. It is @ $5 a tin. It is used for chapped cow's udders and chapped skin. It works for diaper rash, chapped lips, bitten nipples from breastfeeding, chapped hands, scraps and cuts on the skin(WAY BETTER than Neosporan).I know it sounds crazy, but I have used it on all three of my children for everything from diaper rash to skinned knees to cradle cap. It works great!!!!Hope she feels beter real soon!Take care.

OUCH! I am so sorry this is happening! Your doctor should be able to give you a prescription cream for the yeast infection. Here are a few things I would try: get that cow cream stuff the other lady was talking about. I was going to suggest loads of original A&D ointment, I LOVE A&D- I think it works better then any diaper rash cream out there. But really, if it is yeast then no diaper cream is going to get rid of it... but it may make her feel better. Also- have her eat LOTS OF YOGURT!!! Whenever she is on antibiotics (or you for that matter) eat all the yogurt you can- this prevents yeast infections, and helps heal them faster, just make sure it has the live, active cultures in it. Also- I know this will sound strange, but you can get plain yogurt and put it on her diaper area. I would double check with the Dr. first since it is bleeding (you dont want an infection) but for a regular yeast infection the plain yogurt works. A yeast infection is caused from the antibiotics killing the bacteria that we need in our bodies. the yogurt replaces it.

Also- if it is a warm day, or you have some good carpet cleaner... let her remain diaper free! Or use cloth dipes and change them VERY OFTEN until it clears up. the chemicals in the disposables may be bothering her. Whatever you do DO NOT USE HUGGIES!!!!! They have more chemicals in them then any other diaper (the people that work at huggies plants would have sores that would not heal b/c of these chemicals). Try generic diapers if you dont want to use cloth.

I hope she feels better soon!

If it is a yeast infection, I'm not sure if this will help. My daughter had bad diaper rashes all the time. What I would do is let her butt get some air, that is key, the more air the better the healing. Flander's buttocks cream is great, you will have to ask the pharmacist for it. The doctor can also give you a prescription, I don't remember what it was and I don't remember it helping alot. Also, little sits baths after every bm. NO baby wipes. Use a wash cloth, and as little wiping as possible. If you have a detachable shower head, spray her with that after bm's instead of wiping her to clean it. The more you wipe her bottom, the more it will break down the skin. I hope this helps, I hate it when a baby is in pain.

My 4 yr old had the same issue with Omnicef when she was a baby and had MANY ear infections. I took her off the meds told the Dr he needed to change her and he did! As for the diaper rash/yeast infection, my best friend told me about this ointment that is called ENDIT(her child was allergic to Nystantin cream). It sounds funny I know but it is wonderful. You can only order it off the internet(WWW.ENDIT.COM) and comes out of Shallotte, NC. I think it is about 25.00 for a 2oz jar. I asked my dr before I bought some and he said it was good stuff and worked well. It works wonders. This was the ONLY thing that would work. When I first put it on her the rash had started clearing by the next morning. It does not burn or sting the baby and is more like a thick cream mixed with an ointment. If you have any other questions about it you are welcome to email me ____@____.com Luck.

PS the ingredients are everything you have heard of and the main ingredient is Lassar's Zinc Paste.

Go get some athletes foot medicine. My daughters stayed with yeast on their butts. Also use viva paper towels and plan water to wash her after she pees and poops. Viva paper towels are extra soft, and they will not scratch like diaper wipes do. Also if you can get in the drug section at any store something called resenol, you will have to ask the pharmasit, but it is what they gave me in the hospital when my youngest had RSV. The anitbiotics burnt her so bad she bled. Good luck and God Bless.

It sounds like a yeast infection - in children the yeast comes out of their digetive tract and gets on their bottom from the diarrhea. My 3 children had the same problems, especially when I was nursing them. The antibiotics cause many people to get yeast infections also. I'd try to treat her with a yeast infection cream while she's on the antibiotics so she won't be so uncomfortable.

I am in Child care so I can assure you this is common. Most children who are on these antibiotics will have diarrhea and it is followed by the horrible rash. The rash can get to the point of blistering and bleeding. The Dr. may can change the antibiotic but if it is a yeast infection most times they give them a prescription cream to clear the rash. Unfortunately the med and rash go hand in hand. No wipes and careful with the creams, some of them burn.
