My DD started using a sippy around 6 months, when I started her on solids. She was breast fed, so the only time she got a bottle was when I needed someone to feed her for me.

Around 9 months, she started using regular cups. By the time she was 12 months, she only had sippies for car rides or riding in the stroller. They will make a bit of a mess until they get used to it, but they actually learn quite quickly how to use them. :)

My youngest started using a straw cup (not a sippy with a spout) when she was around 6 months old and has been using it since. She is now two, I am still nursing, and she takes her straw cups on the go...but has been able to drink from a regular small cup (no spout, no straw...just a cup) since she was 9 months old. She never had a bottle.

I think it really depends on your baby/toddler. If you're talking about weening off a bottle, you can do that whenever your child takes the sippy cup and drinks well from it. My daughter was off the bottle by 14 mo and my son 12 mo.

When they are ready. I introduced my oldest to a sippy at 6 months...took him until 9 months to figure out how to use it. My youngest started at 3 months since she wouldn't take a bottle.

There is no right time to use a sippy cup. They are not required. My daughter learned how to drink from a regular cup, no lid, at 14 months. She continued to have a bottle or two of milk per day, and drank from a regular cup at mealtimes.

Our pediatrician recommended weaning from a bottle at 12 months, and if it takes a while that is ok. She said absolutely NO bottles after 18 months.

My son was using a sippy around 6-7 months, but had bottles with his formula. Within a few weeks of his 12 month mark, we were bottle free and haven't looked back. I don't think he's ready for an open cup yet though, considering how much he throws off his high chair already. Some kids are more attached to the bottle though and need more time with it.
