Shoes for My 10 Month Old

Our peditrician suggested that we not put hard soled shoes on our ten month old even though he is beginning to walk. She said that they learn to walk better without shoes and that it is better for thier feet to go without until they are older. I have looked into getting some Robeez and other soft soled shoes (www.cutebabyshoes.com) but I wanted to see if anyone else has had exerience with these shoes or others. I want to make sure they will stay on his feet etc. I usually just let him go bare foot at the babysitters but with the weather turning cooler I want to put something on him to protect his feet from the cold and also the pavement since he is beginnign to walk. I do not put socks on him usually becasue they are mainly on a floor that is ceramic tile so he slips with his socks on. Any suggestions welcome.

I have one word for you...Robeez! They are the best! My son wore them even when he was 2, as slippers around the house. They are so cute and very good for their feet. They definitely will stay on her feet, and are a great alternative to bare feet.

We used a couple pairs of Robeez too, but kids grow SO fast, it's hard to keep up with the stylish/expensive shoes. My daughter is 20 months old now ad she LOVES the crocs/air-walks (or knock-offs from Wal-mart) because she can put them on herself now. We have all colors and sizes. They are not just for summer, with socks in the winter her feet sweat. At Payless you can get camo or dark colors for boys and sometimes they have a buy one get one half priced sales, watch for those!

They are more expensive then most shoes but have you tried Stride Rite? They have all kinds of shoes big and small. They are located over by Best Buy in Bloomington.

You can also buy knock-offs on e-bay for cheap. My daughter is now 2-years old and of course wears hard-soled shoes when she is outside of the house. But, when we are at home, she wears the soft-soled shoes as slippers so her feet won't get cold. I don't like her wearing her regular tennis shoes in the house and climbing on her bed, etc....you never know where their tennis shoes have stepped. :) They are also not as clunky as regular slippers, so she won't trip and fall down.

I have had the greatest success with Robeez. They stay on my sons (17 months old)feet with no problems and they have all different styles. He has a sandal pair right now which allow his feet to breathe and I have a pair of boots for the winter. They can wear them with or without socks. He walks better in these than any shoes I have put on him. The only thing with Robeez is that they are really expensive for baby shoes but they have some great knock offs out there. Target has a circo brand that are just as good. Hope this helped.

As our family doesn't have a lot of disposable income, I never tried the Robeez or even the StrideRite shoes that a few others suggested. Our pediatrician gave me some reasonable and practical advice. Her suggestions, which worked out great for us, were socks with the no-slip on the bottom (Old Navy has great ones that don't shrink) or barefoot when in the house. For being out and about, she told me to just get tennis shoes, even from Wal-Mart or Target. They are more to protect baby's feet than anything! Also, anyone who has an infant or toddler with feet that are wide or tall, New Balance makes a shoe in infant and toddler sizes that are less expensive than StrideRite......

Robeez are fantastic. They stay on great and my daughter has become an expert at removing the velcro shoes that you buy at most stores. The only warning I would give you is that if the soles get too worn they will become slippery so just keep an eye on the soles to make sure they have not been worn smooth.

They did not have Robeez when my daughter was small, at least I did not hear about them but since then I have had friends use them and be very happy with them. When my daughter was that age we used socks with the little grippers on the bottom of them and they worked great in the house.

I LOVE Robeez. My daughter is 14 months and we could not get her to keep any shoes on. She was able to take off every pair of shoes i ever put on her, but she keeps the Robeez on. She doesn't even seem to know she's wearing them. They have this secure elastic band and they are snug but very comfortable. they come in cute styles and are worth the price. Also, the soles are suede and offer good traction. I think they are perfect for new walkers. Hope this helps!!!

I can say that I used Robeez shoes for my son until he was about 15 months and they are great! My girlfriend suggested them when he was about 4 months old because of the weather getting cold and he wouldn't keep socks on. He didn't pull them off once and wore them everyday. They are a genius design and so many to choose from. I mostly bought them online directly from the company. There are some local boutiques that sell them also, but they don't always have a large selection or the size you may be looking for. All in all highly recommend and good luck with your soon to be walker!

Hi Tanika,

I agree with your pediatrician. Soft-soled shoes are best for children under two who are still learning how to walk. I LOVE Robeez, but they are expensive. You can get similar shoes for half the cost at Target. They don't have as many cute styles, but they are still cute and work great. I've never had any problems with Robeez or the Target knock-offs falling off of my kids' feet. Barefoot is best in the house, but outside, they do need some protection. Good luck!

Hi Tanika,

My son wore the soft soled Roobeez and they worked out real well. They stay on the feet just fine and the suede sole provides traction. I purchased mine at a store in Rock Hill/Kirkwood called Kangaroo Kids. A size chart is provided in the package and there is a pretty good selection of shoes. I think you and your son will love them. They're like wearing socks - comfortable and you don't have to tie them! They're easy to take on and off.

When my kids were that age, I kept them in socks with grippers on them (gap, childrens place, old navy). The provides for no slip running on hard floors. My 4 year old still wears those type of socks as she is always on the run still. I too, kept my kids out of shoes unless they were necessary as they were beginning to walk for outdoors.

Robeez are Fabulous!! I worked in an infant room at a daycare before my daughter was born and almost every child had a pair of Robeez. They almost never come off their feet and are very durable and easy to clean. They are the only shoe I have ever seen that stays on feet that well. Lot's of stores around KC sell them. It shows you all the retailers on the www.robeez.com sight and they will send you a free catalog.

Our daughter started walking at 9 months and I too let her walk barefoot. We were recommended Robeez and were given a pair for her birthday - they are excellent. Because of the elastic they fit well and don't come off easily. The soft soles mean that they are close to being like a sock. There are other shoes that are similar and less expensive, that I have seen in Target. I'd recommend them. We also used socks that had non-slip dots on the soles - but we never had to test them out on slippery floors. Good Luck.

Robeez are a wonderful choice. We used them with my little one and yes they do stay on (gotta love those elastic tops). And I think Target sells a version of them too that are probably are lot less pricey. One great thing too is that they allow for growing room so you're not constantly buying new ones all the time.
But any chance you get if it's warm inside let he roam shoeless. The reason is it does help them gain balance because they really learn how to manipulate their little toes. Keep an eye on him when he cruises shoeless and you'll see him "grab" the carpet with his toes. :)

Your pediatrician is absolutely right. I got Pediped shoes for my son and they are soft, comfortable and sturdy! I didn't care for the Robeez because they didn't look like real shoes, and because the leather is almost too soft and pliable - they look very worn very fast, and forget about anything ever spilling on them! Not only did the Pedipeds never come off, were easy to put on, but they were so adorable we got sooooo many compliments on them! They are a little pricey at over $30, but I got all of his on eBay and saved $10-$20 easily on each pair. The bottoms could be slippery, but the newer styles seem to have more of a grippy texture, and you could also put the stick-on sole grips sold in shoe departments.

Have fun picking out shoes!!

To answer your question of whether or not Robeez stay on-it is even better than that----the kiddos can't get them off ;) They keep their feet very warm & my daughter did not slip on wood or tile floors in them.

Tanika,

Robeez are great! My daughter loved them. We used them as slippers even after she started wearing hard soled shoes. The soles grip even on hard surfaced like tile and hardwood. You can also throw them in the washing machine if they get soiled. Our daycare loved the fact that they did not have to worry about lost shoes. Over the winter months we put them on over socks or used the soft soled boots.

I have an 8 month old little boy and have had him in Robeez from about 5 months. They are the only things that he actually can't kick off and they allow his feet to grow without the confines of regular shoes. The soles are a rough suede so they also don't slip and when he stands (which he is just beginning to) it's like he doesn't have them on so he can feel the floor beneath him. As you can tell, we just love them. Hope that helps.

Well let me tell you the doctor is right and babies are more resilient than we think. It has been my experience with my own baby to just use socks, as you have already, but personally I preferred using mocassins! Their little feet not only need to be free to move and groove but need to "feel" as well! Babies have 5 hands you know, mouth included. Hard soles is like putting a glove on a bowling ball and then asking it to eat with a fork. Socks or barefoot, mocassins are the best.

Hey Tanika! I am a mother of three, and my first two children started wearing shoes around that age. My ped highly recommend high tops for the ankle support. I guess every ped is different, but that is a new one to me. If you still don't feel comfortable putting your child into shoes they have socks out there with a rubber grip on the bottom. I hope this helps you. Good luck!

Soft soled shoes are great only for kids that walk nearly perfect. They can develop bad habits if your child turns their foot in or walks on the outside of their foot (or walks on toes or heal). More structured shoes that move and flex like normal motion work great(Striderite). Striderite does measure your child and fit a shoe based on their foot.

You might have issues with weather in the Robeez and simlar knockoffs. They are obviously not meant for moisture.

Good Luck

Hi Tanika,

My daughter has 4 pairs of the Robeez and I LOVE them. She is my 5th child and I wish they'd had them with my older kids. They not only stay on but you can toss then in the washer and dryer and they come out looking brand new.

I knew that soft soled shoes were better for them when they were trying to walk, and that barefoot was best, but I worried about her stepping on something so started looking for moccassin type shoes (and something she couldn't take off!). The Robeez were perfect! And they were worth every penny I spent on them because unlike her other shoes, she wasn't loosing one of them everywhere we went because she couldn't take them off. And, she loved all the cute designs. She's 2 and still likes to wear them.

Robeez are great, a lot of shoe stores make knock offs of them now. Target carries a line that look a lot like Robeez, and last I checked Stride Rite sold the actual brand Robeez.

My only advice is not to buy the first pair online if you decide to go with the Robeez brand, we did that and had a little trouble getting a good fit. But eventually found there are some days you need something a little more sturdy than Robeez, so we bought a pair of winter, hard soled shoes from Stride Rite.

I would go with Stridrite shoes. They have a store in the mall. This is at least what my pediatrician had recommended. They will actually measure and fit a shoe to fit the child. You don't just go in an buy a 1 or a 2, they custome them to they childs feet. They are a bit more expensive than normal tennis shoes, but they are well worth it.

Hi Tanika,

When my son was beginning to walk around 12 months old, our pediatrician recommended hard-soled shoes from Stride Rite. That was only because he kept curling his feet and trying to walk on his toes. The shoes corrected that behavior and within a few months, we moved to soft-soled.
Barefoot is best, so you are lucky that it is still warm out. My son was learning to walk in January, so we usually kept him in some kind of shoes. We went with the soft-soled from Stride Rite once he got over his "tippy-toe" issue. Hope this helps!
Have a great day!

I agree with your Doc, being barefoot helps build leg muscles and strengths the foot. When outside of the home, soft heeled shoes are best. Robeez are expensive, but Babies R Us has their own line of shoes (koala baby) that are the same and sell for $12.99.

They ended up being perfect because they were soft soled and extremley comfortable for her. You can also buy them on the internet. The brand is Minnetonka.
