I've been pumping exclusively for 6 weeks now (and di w/ my last LO for 10 month) but this time my nipples are bruised fairly bad.

How long did this last for you?

I can't breastfeed so its either this or nothing... Just looking for someone to commiserate with

What can I do next?

May nbeed larger cups/flanges this time around...

Why would you be able to pump, but not nurse? Inverted nipples, lazy latch, even moderate cleft palate all have means to nurse directly from the breast.

Have you tried to have a serious talk and get information and advice from a well trained IBCLC?

Do you have an electric pump? I have a Medela, and you can ease the suction. The high speed doesnt bother me, but when the suction dial is up all the way its very painful.

I pumped for a year and a half and never experienced any bruising. Does it hurt? I would probably consult a doctor about it cause I don't think that's a normal reaction from pumping.

Good luck!

I had this issue and had to get larger "flanges." They are online, or you can possibly find them at babies r us or similar stores. Call around. There are several larger sizes, so play around. They made a HUGE difference.

Also, you can hand-express. I found that was much more comfortable, especially while I was healing. Look for videos online (kellymom is a good resource) or call a lactation consultant. It is really easy once you know what you are doing.

I pumped exclusively until my son was six months old, but don't remember ever bruising. I did have extreme soreness in the beginning and it felt like bruising, but no visible bruises. I have a madela electric breast pump and I started out really slowly on a very low level. slowly but surely I started adding intensity but I tried to keep the pumping pain free.

I would check the dial on the suction like Molly said. I thought that if I had it higher I would get more out faster, not I only caused myslef pain and got less milk in the long run. Good luck.
