O.k so I don't know how but I got pink eye. This is horrible. Started in 1 eye and is now in both. One hospital gave me drops which seemed to make it worse and then 3 days later another hospital gave me an ointment. Well 5 days out of work and I am still in soooo much pain. I don't have the goop in the mornings anymore but as soon as I open my eyes its like a waterfall went off in my eye while I was sleeping. My eyes constantly burn and are soo watery. I do not have insurance so of course following up with a eye specialist is out of the question. I'm doing the cold compresses just to relieve some of the pain but something has got to give. Luckily my husband and child have not gotten it for I would just cry for I know how much I'm miserable. Any tips or reasurrance that this too will pass would be greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

It may be that you have an underlying issue A lot of times a sinus infection or ear infection will drain from the eyes because there is not any other exit. The pink eye meds won't work on those, I have also heard Strep can act like this too.

This just may one of the reasons the pink eye meds are not working.

AHH! We get pink eye about every year since we had kids. It's terrible for me because I wear contact lenses. Everyone else gave you good advice, because sometimes its viral and antibiotic drops don't help. Something I swear by is Silver Biotics by Biotec Labs (angstrom silver), available online and locally at GNC stores. Be sure to get only this brand. Silver biotics clears up both viral and bacterial infections. A few drops in each eye every 4 hours. Looks better in 12 hours, cured in 3 days. Another med I keep on hand is over the counter allergy eye drops with Naphazoline HCI (any brand ie Visine). These drops constrict the blood vessels and cool burning eyes.
Another important point is to throw away all your eye makeup, including brushes. You can contaminate yourself and have a reinfection super easily.
Good luck, I've been there!

Oh i feel for you, I just got over pink eye a week ago and I had it for over a week also! I went to my doctor and he prescribed drops but they made things so much worse!!! I called him back and prescribed a different drop and it made a WORLD of difference! So maybe instead of going back in you can just give them a call. But my eyes itched and were on fire for an entire week. (also had it in one eye and then got it in both) Just so you know, touching your eye and then touching your other eye will make it spread. And wash your hands like crazy!!! Oh how I hate pink eye! I have no idea how I got it too and luckily no one else in my family got it! Good luck! It will end eventually!

I have pink eye about half the time I catch a cold. It's caused by my touching my nose or mouth and then touching my eyes. The first time I had it I went to the doctor who did give me drops but he said that they may or may not help and that the best thing I could do would be to use warm wet compresses on my eyes, be sure to not touch my eyes unless I had just thoroughly washed my hands with soap first and that the pink eye would clear up on it's own.

After that first episode I have not gone to the doctor, have used the warm and wet compresses and been vigilant in not touching my eyes. I would wipe off the goop with the wash cloth.

My mother had pink eye and since she also was having difficulty with her vision as the result of macular degeneration she went to the doctor. He also told her to not worry; that pink eye would resolve its self and it did after a couple of weeks.

I know that's not what you want to hear but it has been my experience that pink eye is like a cold and must run it's course. For me it's not been more than a few days. I do use OTC eye drops to soothe my eyes during the infection. My doctor said to not use drops that advertise that they get the red out.

I suggest taking ibuprofen for the pain and to try warm wet compresses.

this doesn't sound like pink eye to me...BUT get some chamomile tea, brew it, and use the tea bags as compresses. use the tea as an eyewash. as many times a day as you possibly can. worked for my son (we also have no insurance) we caught his right away so maybe that's why his never got this bad. no matter what it is though, the tea will not hurt, only help. all natural!

The drops will only help if it's bacterial pink-eye, not viral pink-eye. However, I've had pink-eye and, while my eyes itched so bad I wanted to scratch them out, there was no pain involved at all. What you're describing doesn't sound like pink-eye at all, but sounds like a pretty severe eye infection. You need to get seen by a doctor again before it gets worse or you spread it. Good luck!

It seems odd to me that you should have pain with pink eye. Burning, irritation, itchiness, but not pain. That would alarm me. You may need to get a second opinion and bring in the drops that they prescribed the first time. Warm compresses are much more soothing than cold compresses, wash your washrags often and don't use the same one over and over, you will keep reinfecting yourself. I would consider a second opinion.

Well, it's obvious the meds are not working, so it may not be pink eye. You have 2 choices: 1) don't go see an eye doctor and remain in pain for ????; or 2) bite the bullet, pay out-of-pocket, and go see an opthamologist (it's probably cheaper than 2 trips to a hospital ER or urgent care).

You need to go back to the doctor. You may have a new infection occuring that needs different drops for it or they may have prescribed you the wrong drops to begin with. My sister used to suffer regularly growing up with pink eye, (I've only gotten it once in my lifetime) but I remember her saying there's different pink eye infections and you have to get the "right" drops for the infecftion. Just when I had it the one time, I was miserable and went to the ER. However, when I was given the drops it was almost instant relief so I must have been given the right ones. IMO, you shouldn't still be suffering, go back to the doctor and hope you feel better SOON!!

It may be viral...in which case the drops are simply making it worse. I have had evil pink eye a million times and it was always bacterial so the antibiotic drops worked wonders (like poof it's gone in a day type thing). But one time I did get viral and I was taking the drops and it got worse and worse til I could barely open my eyes...then went back to the dr only to discover that I was making it worse with the drops. ugh. I put cool compresses on it and suffered a few days and it went away.

try baby shampoo. It will help. In my experience with pink eye there is only 1 thing that will eliminate it. It gets rid of all sympotoms in 1 dose but youre supposed to take it 2x a day for 5 days. It is called vigamox. it is by perscription only. I don't know if you can call the pharmacy and have them call the doc to call in a rx. But it will probably be almost $100 w/o ins. Maybe try a clinic in your area and see if they have samples. My ped often has samples. If not try the baby shampoo. if you wear contacts STOP. If you wear any glasses or sunglasses wipe them down every morning with rubbing alcohol before you put them on. Good luck.

no more tears baby wash. My x-mil worked for an eye doc and suggested it to me when I was having recurring infections in one eye. I used the j&j and washed the eye twice daily and avoided makeup until it began to clear up. Wash the eye inside and out..it's easiest if you get the soap sudsy on your hands, wash the eye closed and simply run your finger along the lid top and bottom. The soap will get into the eye and your eye will flush it out on its own. It really doesn't hurt, kinda irritating but not as bad as the eye is already hurting!! Also throw away EVERYTHING you use that touches your eye. Eye makeup needs to go inculding anything you use under the eye like concealer or eye cream. If it persists it may not be pink eye. I'd call a specialists office and tell them your issue with insurance. Most towns have a clinic or at least a doc that does work for people just like you who don't have coverage and can't pay a lot for an expensive doctor. I'm not familiar with a lot of the eye docs in town because I've only been here a couple of years but I know Siems is supposed to be one of the best so they may have a good reccomendation and Woodson Eye Clinic usually has many older and uninsured patients in their waiting room. You only get 2 eyes and looking at the world thru just one sucks so don't let this thing get out of hand!!
