Does anyone know what I need to do to get a Tax ID Number? I am starting my own business, I have registered it with the county, etc., but I am not sure what I need to do to get wholesale prices using my TIN at retail outlets and other suppliers. Do I already have a TIN and don't know it? Was it in the county paperwork and I missed it? I am clueless about this and I don't have an attorney on retainer or anything at this juncture. Anyone been down this road? TIA!

What can I do next?

The federal government will assign a taxpayer identification number to your business, and the application is an easy process though the on-line services available on the IRS website. However, you do not need a federal ID number unless you are incorporated or you have employees other than yourself. Your question is really directed at what number you need to provide to companies that you want to buy from as a wholesaler. Most companies will ask for a SALES TAX number, which is a number that will be given to you by the Texas State Comptroller's office when you register for collecting and paying sales tax. You can apply for this number even if you are not currently making taxable sales. The application is very easy. Go to http://www.window.state.tx.us/ an click on Texas Taxes. The comptroller's offic eis very very helpful; you don't need a lawyer to get an ID number.

This should help and give you all the info you need. Be aware that once you have that ID, you do need to file regularly even if you have had no sales. It's no big deal, but something a lot of people get caught on. Good luck with your business. If you need anything else, feel free to ask away. My husband and I own our own business and I am toying with the idea of going into small business consulting to help people just like you. I'd be happy to answer your questions just to give me an idea of what people might need help with if I did do that.
