Hey girls...My husband and I are really trying to improve our credit and get some things paid off. We're looking to do debt consolidation, but we're not real sure who to contact or where to start. Any suggestions on a good company or bank to go with? What are your thoughts on debt consolidation?

What can I do next?

I know that this has been said, but DAVE RAMSEY!!!
He has got all his stuff onsale right now for Christmas and he is on Mon-Fri am570 from 1-4pm. He is GREAT! My husband and I went to his 5hr seminar in Dallas this last Spring. We were going to go out to a nice resturant afterwards for dinner, but after listening to him we had dollar hamburgars on our way home!
We should be out of debt(except for the house) in 6 months! :) Hooray!
Good Luck!

If you are looking at Debt Consolidation as a way to "save your credit standing" you are really barking up the wrong tree. They will do absolutely nothing that you cannot do yourself. Trust me..I went through Consumer Credit Services about 15 years ago. I only had a couple of accounts that I needed help with after my divorce. Well they totally ruined my credit with the companies that I was in good standing with due to slow pays. It is basically a gimmick for the credit consolidation company to make a buck off of your misfortune.

There is good news! I found a great program that has helped my husband and I work our way almost into a debt free lifestyle...Dave Ramsey. He is awesome! He teaches you HOW to change your lifestyle so that you can be in control of your money and not have your money control you. Be warned... you may not like what he has to say. Most of us (me included) have to learn to handle our money like grown-ups and how to get rid of the "5yr old I want it now" mentality. Once that is gone, our finances seem to straighten up.

Good Luck!

I agree with the previous poster- check out Dave Ramsey (www.daveramsey.com). Using his principles my husband and I are now debt free except for the house and have a 4 month emergency fund in place. Much of his info is on his website, and I think his books are on sale right now. If you are serious about it, he'll give you the tools to make it happen, but again, like the pp he won't recommend consolidation in most cases.

There is a better way to go about paying off your debts! My daughter and her husband just finished going through Dave Ramsey's program at our church. The course is called "Financial Peace University". It is offered at lots of local churches; I've seen it advertised on signs at several of the churches around Arlington and Mansfield. It was a wonderful experience for them--every week after class they were so excited to tell us what they had learned. They took it through our church, Connect Church, in Arlington, and I'm sure it will be offered again. If you're interested, you can call the church office at ###-###-####, to find out the details. Good luck!

I highly recommend Dave Ramsey's "Financial Peace University". Also, become a subscriber of Mary Hunt's "Debt-Proof Living" online magazine. You can get a hard copy each month if you prefer instead. The online magazine gives you access to alot of extras you will need in order to calculate each month's payments, etc. Whatever you do, don't fall for the credit repair schemes you see advertised on TV and different places. It took awhile to get in this mess, and it's going to take a while to get out. Just do the work, become diligent, and stay the course. You will be so proud of yourself! Go to www.debtproofliving.com and www.daveramsay.com! Good luck! B. P.

If you are trying to reduce or get rid of credit card debt, you can call and try and get it done yourself for free. If they won't work with you, just tell them your only other option is to file bankruptcy and they will get nothing or they can work with you to get to a payment you can afford.

From experience, debt consolidation is not the answer to getting rid of credit card debt. I do also highly recommend the Dave Ramsey program. Check it out now as he is having some great holiday giveaways! :)

There is a great opportunity to get ripped off with debt consolidation. Make sure you really check them out and do not pay them any money to consolidate your debts. You might go to the Dave Ramsey website and read that information about debt consolidation and see if any of that advice helps. Good Luck on your efforts!
