I'm about 16 weeks pregnant and I am wanting to dye my hair but, I did hear that it could hurt the baby. Does anyone know anything about this? I don't want to do it if it's going to in anyway harm my baby. Has anyone else done this before? Is there a hair dye product I could use safely?
Thanks Women!

I didn't know I was pregnant until 7 months (long story), and I dyed my hair the whole time. DD was born healthy - and at 5, is smart as a whip.

I'm a stylist and coloring hair is typically fine. Stay away from perms and relaxers though. If you want to be extra cautious, have the color done in foils only with lo-lights or hi-lights, that way the color will not seep in into your scalp and the risk of it getting into your bloodstream is pretty much non-existent.

Definitely go to a stylist, the major problem with coloring hair during pregnancy is that sometimes the color doesn't turn out the best due to hormones and pre-natal vitamins, so the stylist can create a better formulation than what you would get at a store.

I died my hair during my first, and have already once during this pregnancy. My understanding its just the fumes you want to avoid extreme exposure to. Probably also depends on how extreme you are about the do's and don'ts of pregnancy.

I would suggest, however, to go to a stylist - don't do it yourself!

The dye does not enter your blood stream, so it's perfectly safe.

I've dyed my hair every 6 weeks through 2 pregnancies and have 2 very healthy little kiddos.
Have fun!

I am a stylist, and i agree with the last post, Momma L, completely!!
Go for highlights if your concerned. I colored my hair throughout my pregnancy(scalp to ends) and had no problems and my daughter is a happy and healthy 2 yr old. Check out AVEDA salons. Their hair color is 97-99% natural and beautiful!!!!

Your fine and safe to dye your hair BUT I wouldnt do it yourself, at home dyes have a stronger odor and may bother you. I can stand to dye hair at home anymore (out of a box) anymore. I used to do all my family/friends hair...Good luck, you'll feel great with a fresh do!

I say ask your OBGYN. During both of my pregnancies, my OB was against coloring hair. I did not by any means have his blessing to do so. Please check with the doctor first. I have no idea if it can be harmful or not, I am not the expert by any stretch of the imagination. Some doctors may have strong opinions others may not, check with yours first.

Anything that touches your skin is absorbed within seven seconds. In our house we have a rule that if you can't eat it, then don't put it on your skin. Even things that say "do not ingest" will get into your blood stream via contact with your skin, so I would say no, do not dye your hair. However, I am also one of those who eats all organic and natural, etc. So I take it to extremes--I figure there is so much we can't control (air pollution, off-gassing from cabinets and carpet and paint, etc), so we might as well control what we can. Check out the environmental working groups website about all the toxins they find in umbillical chord blood--it will make you think!
Congrats on your pregnancy!

It is safe to color your hair AFTER the 12th week of pregnancy. I would not suggest doint it yourself, but instead go to a salon. Make sure it is a well ventilated salon and you should be fine. I would make the appointment during the week and as early during the day as possible; as the salon is less busy and less cross fumes from other clients. Now DO REALIZE that your color may not come out the way it is suppose to due to hormones. I have seen women go in for an arborn tint and come out Carrot Top red...... Makes some very interesting pictures and a little good homor in the OB/Gyn office.... If you decide to go for it, just be preparred for what ever color yolu get. Good Luck & Congrats on baby!

High lights do not sit on your scalp and can not be absorbed. Hair dye down to your roots will sit on your scalp and can be absorbed. Many women dye when ever and they experience no problems, but it's not a chance I was willing to take when I was pregnant. I even gave up mouth wash with alcohol in it I was so 'into' staying away from anything that might affect my developing son. Perhaps I went over the top, but my son is 12 yrs old, and smart and handsome as they come. I think it was totally worth it and for me it was not a difficult thing to do.
