Hi ladies!

We are in the market for a good down comforter and would like any advice or suggestions you may have. We plan to put a duvet cover over it but want a really nice one that is warm and stays in its shape. We have had a Ralph Lauren one in the past and did like it but it is old and won't clean to white anymore. RL is pricey so I wanted to try a different brand but one that is also good quality. We have received two as gifts, one from JCP and one from Bed and Bath and neither worked well and the feathers all fell to one side. We are wanting the small waffle squares that will NOT shake from one square to another and will not all fall to one end and does not leak feathers out. We are thinking of Lands End, LL Bean, Pottery Barn, The Company Store, Ralph Lauren....any thoughts on any of these stores or any others you may know of or have experience with? Our price range is about $200-$250 for a King size. Thanks so much for your help!

What can I do next?

We have one from the company store that ties to each corner of the duvet cover. It is really nice and we love it.

I just got one from Ikea. They have a pretty big selection. And I chose synthetic vs. feather because of the reasons you stated. You can find them at Ikea for your price range and less.

When I was younger (like over 20 years ago) people advised me to buy the very best down comforter I could afford because it would last forever. I though " Oh sure" but did. I still have it and it is in great, and I do mean great, condition now. I bought from a place still in business called The Company Store. You can buy online at www.thecompanystore.com and get the best values I personally have ever seen. Good luck and stay warm. Oh and BTW. I use my comforter year round. What a value.

Wow thats a huge price for 1 piece of bedding. Personally i suggest Walmart where you can get a nice one or even a full comforter set for as low as 14 but the best ones are around the 50 range. I know this cause my husband and I still use 1 I bought 13 years ago and it still keeps us warm

LL Bean & Land's End are both good quality. Bean's quality is not quite what it used to be, but still much better than most. We got a quilt from Kohl's that only lasted a few washings! We have a Bean's quilt that is about 15 yrs old & a little faded but still good. Except for stains the kids made on it, it is exquisitely beautiful, and very warm. It is not down though, it has cotton batting. I have no experience with those other brands.
Another option, if you live near any Amish is to ask in their community who is a good quilt maker. She will custom make you a quilt, of excellent quality. If you have the down from an old quilt she can reuse, that will cut the cost considerably. Most Amish will do diligent work, not try to cheat you, and charge a fair price, and you can get the exact colors, pattern, thickness, etc of your hearts desire.

Ross and Marshall's carry many of those brands and the cost will be noticeably less. Go to the store and take a look at what's available. You already know what characteristics you're looking for.

Company Store hands down...if you are on a budget..they have tons of discounted items, too (I go to the factory direct store in La Crosse, WI). The other great thing about them is that you can pick different weights and warmth levels. They have fantastic quality, and are great about returns if you have a problem!

I have O. from Lands End (they offer warm, warmer, warmest) and it has help up very well for about 10 years now.....
My advice is to look at the quilting pattern (channels) and buy the best O. you can afford.

I have 7 down comforters from IKEA (2 of them the 4 season's "double" quilts that snap together so you can have 2 in the winter and use the thin one in the summer and the thick one in spring and fall... or.. if you sleep cold like me, use 2 year round or my H and just use a thin one year round). They get washed every month to every other month... and I've had the oldest one for nearly 10 years.

I've had MUCH more expensive down comforters and they just haven't lasted or the down ends up all piled to one side, etc.

We have two of the Pottery Barn ones and LOVE them. If we are ever in the market again, that is what we will buy. (We have a Q and a K.)

try overstock.com- I have been pleased with what I have gotten. The shipping is super cheap. They also have comments, and these are very helpful. You also might pull up epinions.com and see if there are any comments there before you choose, and consumers too. Good luck. Oh, amazon rates too, look at them also.
