Does anyone know of a way to get the smell of smoke out? My daughter was given a futon and the mattress smells horribly like cigarette smoke. We have had it outside airing for 3 days and sprayed it down 2 times with febreeze and it still smells horrible!
Thanks!

What can I do next?

Smoke and the chemicals associated with it are very harmful. I hate to say it, but the woman whose advice was to get new foam seemed to be right on the ball.

Good luck

fight smoke with smoke, sounds weird, but in my old apartment, the closets reeked of smoke, i tried everything, and finally i bought some really strong incense, and light in the the closets, closed to doors, and left it for a day or two. they smelled great after that. try sticking the futon in a closet your not using and doing the same, it might work for this too. godd luck

There is a product called Smell BeGone that might work for you.

You will probably need to replace the foam inside the material. Smoke gets in pretty deep. I'm not really familiar with futons, but you can get foam pieces cut to size at places like the Foam Factory. Open the cloth covering on your futon (don't know if they have zippers or not. If not, open on a seam so it's easy to close again) and remove and measure the foam or filling inside. My guess is that's where the smell is coming from. Get a piece cut to that size (JoAnn carries foam as well) replace inside cloth covering and zip or sew shut. While you have the cover off, you might think about having it professionally dry cleaned. That might help too.

I would try Odo Ban. It is available from Sams Club and works really well. It will still likely take LOTS of fresh outdoor air since the matress is so thick and the odor remover cannot penetrate it completely, but I think you'll have luck with the Odo Ban. Let me know what ends up working for you (always up for new remedies, LOL). Of course, a fresh new cover will also help until the smell is completely gone. I bought a vehicle that reeked of cigarettes and a good dose of Odo Ban and time and the smell was completely gone. Good luck!

There is a product called ODO-BAN and its sold at Sams club. I think Wal Mart has it too. You can get a 1 gallon jug of concentrate at Sams for about $10.00. I have used it for all kinds of smelly things, smoke-urine-vomit, it is great! It also is a disinfectant so it kills germs too. It states right on the bottle that it is good for fire restoration. We have a rental house and got a carpet cleaning machine after some smokers moved out, we put an ounce or two of the odo-ban in the machine with the cleaner and it took care of the smell. You may want to try this with the futon? Hope this helps.

Try sprinking baking soda liberally on it and leaving it on for a while and then vacuuming it up after an hour or so.

Febreeze is just another chemical like the cigarette smoke, you need to go with some natural products to help. Check out this website www.checnet.org/healthehouse. Especially if you have anyone in that house hold that has allergies or asthma. They should not even be exposed to the cigarette smoke laiden mattress or furniture.

You can even call me and I can get you more info about healthier cleaning products ###-###-####.

I use Sol-u-mel (is all natural)and it works wonderful on strong odors and becareful of incenses and other strong fragances because they are usually chemicals especially formaldehyde or phthalates (which are linked to cancer).

Any time we've had to get smoke smell out of an area (car, clothes, carpet, house) we used an ozone air purifier. It has worked wonders every time. Similar to airing out - just a LOT faster. Lock it in a room with the purifier aimed at it. They are expensive but maybe you have a friend you could borrow one from??

Good luck! Nothin' worse than getting something free from a friend only to have to pay to dispose of it. ;0)

There is an ozone spray my husband told me about. They used to use it to get rid of the vomit smell in airplanes when he was teaching aerobatics (lots of students got airsick!). Sorry I don't know the exact name, but a place that specializes in industrial cleaning supplies would probably know.
However, that may not actually be the problem. We have a futon, too, and futon mattresses are not made like regular bed mattresses, since they have to be able to fold up. It may just be that the filler material is some fiber that has an unpleasant odor.
Good luck!
