Fevers with Teething???

My daughter is 14.5 months and has the most awful time with each and every tooth that has pushed through. My three other children never went through what she seems to be going through. For the past couple of days she has been running a low grade fever, especially at night. She is eating & drinking fine, but is a tad bit crabbier than her usual crabby self...:) She shows no other signs of a cold, flu or ear infection, so I'm assuming the fever is due to the fact that she has a couple molars protruding through her gums. The experts say that teething doesn't cause fevers, but in my experience, it seems to go hand in hand. Has anyone else dealt with a similar situation?

Thanks, D.

So What Happened?

First off, thanks for everyones advice... I've come to the conclusion that it was her teeth and that it is just going to be a battle with each one that comes through. As for the "experts", I've read many books & pamplets that claim doctors will not commit to saying that a fever is a direct cause of teething. There is no proven factor that says a fever is caused by teething, but in my other children it always seemed to go hand in hand but was very mild. With my daughter it is extreme, but nothing about her personality or fits is mild...lol! :) Thanks again, it is great to have other mothers out there to relate our info. with. :)

Doctors claim that teething is not associated with fevers, diarrhea, , runny nose, lack of appetite, ear aches, etc. WRONG. With all 3 of my children (17, 16 and 2 years old) they have ALL have the same symptoms. My mom who raised 8 children ALL had the same symptoms. I cant believe that it is a coincidence every time. Just watch the temp. If it spikes above 101 call the doctor and run the signs and symptoms by him...something else might be going on.

Someone else may have mentioned this but Camila is a homeopathic remedy from wholefooods which i find actually works! and my kids seem to know it does as they open their mouths wide everytime for me to squirt the little liquid dose in.

My youngest has such a great temperament that if he is cranky at all I give him this and it really helps him. Sure enough next day or so he cuts a tooth through.

Hi D.,

You sound my me. One of my twin girls(16.5 months old) just had a fever last Thursday and was throwing up. She was eating her dinner and threw that up. At the time, my hubby did not think anything of it, just that she had too much to eat. Then, later in the evening when they came back from their "date", she threw up all over Daddy, the counter top and dish washer. Oh course, she was crying and had throw up coming out of her nose which made it hard to breathe and her throat must have hurt as well.

So I called my Mom and she said this is usually due to her teething, especially since she is getting her molars in.
Her fever was like 98.00 and I put a cold rag on her head to get the warmth down. She was not a happy camper needless to say.

But, after 20 minutes, she was feeling better. We did check on her at midnight to make sure she was not having a seizure. She was fine.

Hope this helps you..... :-)

I have a 14 month old as well. When her molars came in she didn't catch a fever. But her temperture was a little higher than usual, she was very cranky ,and hot. But it only lasted a few days. I have a friend who's son is the same age and he goes through the same thing when he is teething. I talk to my doctor and she said some babies do get tempertures while teething, it's normal.

Hi D.. I'm not sure what experts you are referring to, but my son's ped. Dr. Khuu, has personally told me that fevers do come with teething. I took Jake to him on several occasions with a high fever and he laughed and told me that he was just teething. Give your child some Motrin or Tylenol and sit back. You sounded like you know the experts are wrong. Don't let someone else influence your insticnts. Godd luck with this. Best Wishes, T.

Hi D.,
First off, what "experts" said that teething doesn't cause fevers? Because I don't believe many "experts" would agree.
If you have a self-care guide from your doctor/hospital, which are typically written by the Physicians, look up Fever in Children and it will tell you in black & white that amongst other reasons for fever "Teething may cause a low grade fever up to 100"

My son had a fever of 102.4 when his first front two teeth came in. And he was miserable too! And his Dr. said as long as he's eating & taking in fluids, he's fine, he had no sign of an ear infection or cold/flu. His Dr. also told me that the fevers tend to run up at night esp when they are asleep because that is when their resistance is low.

So Deanne, I wouldn't worry too much esp if she's eating & drinking fine, just give her some Children's Tylenol (Or whichever OTC Children's fever/pain reducer you prefer-NOT ASPIRIN), sponge her down with LUKEWARM water, and dress her lightly. Now, if her fever spikes past 103 that's a different story, I would contact her doctor.
I'm sure you already know all this.

Take Care and I hope she feels better!

Oh & I almost forgot....you can try some Orajel to help sooth her gums, that worked for me. :)

I have a 16 month old boy and teething is miserable. We are cutting the first 4 molars and he is running temps on the days or nights the teeth are moving. His teeth move for a day and then settle and then move and settle. It can take a while for a tooth to completely emerge. But when the crankyness and fever come most definitly something will chage in his mouth. I have taken him to the doc to check for ear infections or the beinging of a sore throat and he always gets a clean checkup. I now just love him through the hard days and nights. And dose with Tylenol at night when i suspect something is moveing around in there. Helps to keep the fever at bay and the irritation to a minimum. My best remedy is tiny tiny bits of ice. Numbs the whole mouth and my son really likes it. I do make sure he is sitting on my lap the whole time we are eating our ice!! Good luck and the best advice I can offer up is you know your children the best. Do what you know makes them feel better!!

D.,
My daughter was the same way, my sone was a breeze.... But none the less we too had low fevers when teeth were being cut. I was told to alternate between tylenol and motrin, (I think check with your doctor) because they are different you can piggy back them with overdoseing. For my kids and I know you'll think I'm nuts, cause this is a bit un orthodox but I gave them beef jerky to teeth thier molars on. You have to hunt through the bag to find the toughest peice you can find and they can gnaw on it with thier back teeth, also I think the salt was kinda soothign on the gums (maybe I don't really know) but I do know ti was kinda messy lots of drool, but they were happy and able to itch thier gums on the thick texture....
Just make sure it is the mildest flavor you can find and keep a close eye, we didn't do it on purpose ,my son sneaked a piece and we looked over and he was just a gnwing away on it happy as a clam. I would also only recomend that for molars not for true babies, and of course only if you have started her on meats and table foods!!

Godd luck,
H.
