Fashion - Makeup Follow up Question! :)

I just asked a fashion question... now for makeup..

I don't wear much makeup, not every day for sure. So, the makeup I have in my bag is literally from my wedding almost 7 years ago!

What basics do you have? Where do you buy them? What do you consider to be a must have when it comes to makeup.

Thanks!
Jessica

I consider makeup to be my "war paint" ;) ((and also my sunscreen))

- BareMinerals Foundation (mineral veil sometimes)
- Blush (L'oreal)
- Eyeliner (Revlon - twistable type)
- Mascera (Full'n'soft waterproof)
- Lipgloss (from Gap)

I like bare minerals, because I don't like liquid foundation. I used to just use regular compact powder... but it was one of those "things", tried it... loved it... and my SKIN loves it (no breakouts/ clogging/ etc). I don't do their whole regimen thing... just swipe on the foundation as a base (using the wrong brush so I get lighter coverage). If they have a store near you you can do a makeover.

ACTUALLY that's what I'd recommend period. A month's worth of free makeovers at the cosmetics counters. WATCH what they choose, and how they apply it. Just tell them you're shopping around to find a make up that you love... and that you want something

- fresh and natural
- easy
- dramatic
- fast
- whatever your personal desires for makeup are.

That takes the "buy it" guilt/pressure off... because you've let them know up front that you're trying all the counters. They should give you a card with what they used, and some even have little application guidebooks. Wear it home. See how it looks in real light. See what feels good on your face, and what's annoying.

If your makeup is 7 yrs old..........I'd trash it and start over with fresh products.

I use all Clinique products, cleansers, moisturizers and make up products. They are guaranteed and if you don't like it you can take it back. Clinique is also dermatoligist recommended. My 15 yr old daughter is strictly Clinique as well. I LOVE the face cremes....I do not look my age and am often mistaken for early-mid 30's. However, I have been faithful with cleansing, sunscreen etc and using Clinique since I was about 11.

In the winter, I wear a light foundation (City Base) but in summer I wear tinted sunscreen and apply a little powder over that. Little blush, eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara and lip gloss. I spend less than 5 minutes on my makeup for daily, if I am going out I spend more time.

Go to a Clinique counter and the Clinique staff is great to help you. I've found the staff at Neiman's and Nordstrom to be the best. Also, Sephora has good people for consults as well.

Go to Nordstroms and visit the Bobby Brown counter. They can do a very natural make up look on you. Buy the basics = a good foundation ( especially if you are over 30) a blush, basic eyes and a a night lipstick and a day lipstick. At least let them make you up... walk around for the day and see how you feel.

I love Bare Minerals for a foundation, plus they have a mineral that you can use for cheek color, eye shadow and eye liner. It's called Glee I think. anyways, that and a mascara and a clear lip gloss is ALL YOU NEED! Good luck.

Concealer (to take care of those bags under my eyes) and any random redness/pimples. Currently using one from Amazing cosmetics (that I got at Sephora). I find that it's the strongest one that really covers the spots.

A powder for just for some sheer coverage. (I don't use foundation.. too much work) I used to use Shiseido, but have been using the mineral kind b/c its supposedly better for your skin. No brand that I'm partial to (Ive used covergirl, neutrogena and bare minerals... all work fine) I sometimes use blush, but sparingly... it gives you a healthier look, tho I confess when pressed for time, its not as high on my priority.

A lash curler & mascara. It really makes your eyes pop and makes you look 'awake'. I love my curler from Shu Uemura and I'm loyal to Maybelline Volum Express in black waterproof mascara.

I hardly ever wear make-up, but when I do it's super simple with using only 4 things (5 if you HAVE to wear foundation, 6 if you HAVE to wear mascara).

1. Eyeliner. I use an angled brush with a dark brown eyeshadow because I hate the pencils or liquid eyeliner. It's also much easier to remove.

2. Eyeshadow. A duo which you use one color for base and the other for your lid. Neutral for day and dramatic for night.

3. Blush. Use one that is sheer when applied, but looks like you'd never choose it normally. Mine looks like someone from the 80's would wear, but it's super sheer and gives my cheeks a rosy natural glow.

4. Lip gloss, or lipstick if you prefer. Again neutral for day and dramatic for night.

I don't like the way foundation feels on my face when I wear it and I've tried them all. I only wear it if I know my picture is going to be taken a lot and I'd wear the mineral foundation. I believe mascara is a preference and it depends on how dramatic you want your eyelashes to be. It can be worn daily, but I've been fortunately blessed with decent eyelashes.

I suggest going to whichever your favorite make-up brand is and have them give you a little makeover. I too am a huge fan of Clinique and also MAC. They are always more than happy to help you out. Yes, throw out that 7 year old make-up. Bacteria grows on your brushes, applicators and make-up after using it. It's good to annually go through your make-up and throw out what you haven't used or worn in awhile.

Good Luck and have fun with it!

First, I would recommend that you throw away your 7 yr old makeup and go get some new stuff!! :) That stuff does not last forever. Second, I would recommend trying Bare Minerals. I switched to this a couple years ago after my 1st baby was born to help clear up my horrible acne from pregnancy and I LOVE it!!! Its very natural and easy to apply. I have always had sensitive skin, so I could never wear the stuff from the store (Target/Walmart), so finding good quality make up that doesn't cost a fortune is hard. This stuff is not too expensive and since you don't wear much, it would last you a while too. :) You can buy it at Ulta or they now have Bare Mineral stores in malls too.

Where you buy your makeup depends on what you want to spend. You don't have to spend a fortune to look pretty. However, you get what you pay for. My makeup is all over the place. I like clinique alot and they have great cleansers, moistureizers and everything else in between! However, clinique does not have a foundation that matches my skin tone it's either too pale or too dark...but I found an awesome one from the estee lauder that goes great with my skin color. I typically buy from Estee and Clinique when a special is going on and then use the mascara, blush, and eye shadow that you get in the gift (most times). If I'm buying mascara I love Lancome's mascara, but it's pricey. Another good place to look is Ulta...the ulta brand is priced great and it works well...I just bought lip gloss from Ulta yesterday for $4...and I love it!!!! I would start off with the Clinique counter at a department store and let them experiment with some colors on your face and go from there...if you go to clinique's website you can see who's having the special gift and once you spend (I think it's $30) you get the goodies...

Jessica,

I use Mary Kay and LOVE it!!! I do go overboard every day, but my suggestion if you don't wear a lot is to have a concealer (for the pimples and dark circles that need to be covered), a mineral powder (it is so light weight you will barely know it is there), a light pink blush, and some good mascara. You will look "finished" everyday, but not overdone. Then just buy a highlighting, base and accent eye shadow (a consultant can help you with that), plus an eye liner, and you are set for those special occasions. I also suggest using their TimeWise Collection. It is AMAZING how quickly you will see your skin firm and tone (without looking fake). Hope this helps and good luck!

I'm a Clinique girl and have been since my college days. I wear a water based foundation with loose powder (or pancake applied with a brush for the same effect), a lipliner pencil (with a smear of lipstick on top), a little pencil eye-liner, and a shadow duo on the lids. If I haven't been outside much recently, I add a brush stroke or two of blush.

That's it.. unless I'm going "out". Then I add mascara.

I spend less than 5 minutes (average) on makeup daily.

If you want to cut back on "supplies" Clinique has a pancake powder that is a dual powder/foundation. You can use it wet as foundation or dry as a powder finish. I never apply lipstick without lipliner...as lipstick tends to wear off throughout the day with meals and such... but the liner gives my lips more "depth" and the color stays better. Plus... I don't have to be as "exact" when touching up lipstick in my rearview mirror ;)

I have become one of those girls who doesn't leave the house without makeup (I NEVER thought I'd be one). If I had to pick essentials, it would be foundation, bronzer, eyeliner, and mascara.

I love mineral powder makeup for my foundation. I have mild rosacea, and my Bare Escentuals mineral powder covers it up, but it looks natural, and it lasts all day. You just have to be careful not to put too much on -- if you do, it looks pretty bad. Start with a tiny amount, and experiment from there.

I don't recommend getting the other Bare Escentuals/Bare Minerals products -- just the foundation. You could also get mineral powder makeup from other brands -- but I'd avoid the drugstore brands. I tried one and it was useless.

I like Origins a lot for eye shadow. I like MAC and Clinique for lipstick. And I've heard great things about Maybelline Lash Stiletto mascara -- I'm going to buy that next.
