Bottles? - Minneapolis,MN

I think my baby's bottles are giving her unusual amounts of gas. It seems like they allow her to gulp down her formula, and then of course she gets upset stomach from it. I would like some input on whether the bottles out there that claim to reduce gas really work. They are so expensive, I don't want to go invest in them unless they really do make a difference. What bottles have you liked or not liked? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

With my daughter I used Dr. Browns, they helped with her colic and reflux. With my son I use Playtex Drop In's and have never had a problem with gas ever.

I really did think that both the breast-flow and the avent bottles worked for this. Of course, I can't say for sure because I don't know what she would have been like with another bottle. But we did notice that there was not that build-up of little bubbles on top of the milk in the bottle. And we didn't have much trouble with a gassy baby. The breast-flow is a little more effort to clean, but we got used to it,a no it was no big deal. With the avent we had to learn the hard way to make sure every time that the top was screwed on just right. If it wasn't put on level, then all of the milk just poured out of it when we gave it to the baby.

It might be the nipples rather than the bottles. They usually have Step 1, 2 and 3. If you're using a 2 or 3 try going down a step. If that doesn't work, I get Dr. Brown bottles and they are GREAT at reducing gas and spit up. Good luck!

We used Playtex VentAire bottles for my first granddaughter. They seemed to work good, but VERY expensive and sometimes the bottom leaks if your not quite awake when you put them together. For our newest granddaughter we are using Playtex Drop-In's, love them. For less then $4 you can buy one at Target or Walmart to give them a try. I know we went to garage sales and bought the outside bottle for next to nothing and just bought new nipples and of course the liners. Found that Walmart or Target liners are cheaper than Playtex ones and work just fine.
Good luck

Playtex drop-ins. I liked them a lot. It's really easy to push all of the air out of the dispasable liner, then the baby can't swallow any air, no matter how you hold the bottle.

Playtex Ventaire work Awesome, my daughter had colic so we bought these. We've been using them for 6mos. now no problems. The other day just for a experiment I gave my daughter a cheapo bottle and she collapsed the nipple sucking so hard and YES got all kinds of unwanted air/gas from it.

My daughter is extrememly picky with nipples and bottles so before you go out and spend a fortune go buy or two bottles and see if she'll take them if she does than you can go stock up. Playtex Ventaire are the most similar to a regular bottle, Dr.Browns bottles and some of the other's look complicated and a pain to wash.

are you still using the slow flow nipple? If not, go back to that. We switched to Dr. Brown's; pain in the butt to clean, but made a big difference with spit up, which made it worth it in the end. She is now 7 months and we STILL have not been able to move her up to medium flow b/c of the "gulping". Every baby is different!

I used Dr. Brown's bottles with my son. They claim to reduce colic, gas etc...

I guess I'm not sure if they really worked or if he just never had any gas problems. I will use them again for my daughter. They are reasonably priced.

Good luck.

My son also had terrible gas and stomach issues. I tried so many different kinds, but I ended up using the Gerber Gentle Flow bottles [Got them at Walgreens for $3/bottle]. They are an exact copy of Avent bottles, except they are BPA free. You can even use Avent nipples with them.

I want to mention though, if you switch bottles and she is still having gas...it could be the formula. My son was colicky until about 3 months, and he had lots of issues with milk-based formula so he ended up on soy and he got so much better after that

I really like the playtex drop in bottles. Also make sure that you have the slow flow nipples. These seem to make my daughter eat slower. And she doesn't spit up as much when we use these. I am nursing, but supplement occasionally with the bottle.

Hope this helps.

First of all, I've realized that all babies are different and all bottles work differently for each baby. Everyone told me that Dr. Brown's was the only way to go. For the first 2 months of my daughter's life we used them. She had HORRIBLE, painful gas and also acid reflux the entire time. So I switched to the Playtex drop-in system (the bottles with the bags) and the gas and reflux immediately stopped. We used them until she went off the bottle. The nipples of the Drop-in bottles have a larger base which prevents the baby from sucking in air while drinking, and the bags deflate as the formula is taken in to eliminate air in the bottle. Plus, another upside to them is that the soft plastic bags are safer than the hard plastic bottles (Unless you get BPA free hard plastic).

My friend's baby, however, had a hard time with the large nipples on the drop-in bottles so she switched to the Playtex Vent-Aire bottles and her baby's gas stopped.

I would definitely try them though!

I used the Dr. Brown bottles as well. They reduced the gas and my son was able to stop taking Zantac for his acid reflux once I started using them as well.

Hi L.,
There is a bottle I know that reduces gas and actually somewhat prevents it. I copied a link to send to you, I know from experiance that these bottles do help. I used them for my youngest daughter and I have friends who have used them for their kids also. And honestly I do not think they are that costly. Here is the link hope this helps.
http://www.playtexbaby.com/Products/Bottles/VentAire.aspx if that link does not work then try to search Vent Aire Bottles. Hope this helps ya out.
