I am pregnant with my third child. My other two are still very young ages 2 and 3. I want to purchase a baby sling but have no idea which kind to even start shopping for. I never had any such luck with the baby bjorn type of front carriers and I have been seeing alot of the slings.

What can I do next?

I have a Moby wrap and I abosolutely LOVE it. It is very versatile and extremely comfortable. I used it with my twins since they were first born and my sis uses one just like it with her 24lb son.. he absolutely loves sitting in it. There are lots of positions you can put the baby into that are comfy for both the mom and the baby and the sling grows with the baby.

It can be a bit confusing all the different kinds out there. You can do a search online to see the differnt ones. If you happen to see a copy of Mothering Magazine it has lots of ads for slings and you can find resources. there are also sites that tell you how to make one! I made my own years ago, like 35, when it was not the popular thing to do, but I got lots of comments from older moms about it (positive) and I loved carrying my baby next to me and not in a plastic seat or stroller! ugh! I could just slip the strap down, feed her and off we'd go again. It was great and gave me free hands for the other ones. I think one of the most popular ones is the Maya Wrap. Check out these sites: www.peppermint.com, www.mammasmilk.com. Mothering Magazine is a wonderful source of information for new mom, moms-to-be you can check it out online or check your bookstore. I still love to read it and I'm a grandma!A big thumps up to you for "wearing" your baby!

Im not sure the brand but if you go to Target there is a black sling that comes in a yellow box and the handle to the box is the same pattern and material as the sling. My son was 4 1/2lbs when i tried it with no luck...so i got frustrated and took it back for a front carrier. Using the sling is like the art of breastfeeding from what i hear, its a task but well worth it once conquered! :)

I have and love my peanut shell baby sling. the web site to see these slings is www.goo-ga.com. You can see them and pick what you want. Also you can just google slings and will come up iwth a wide variety of slings.

First off know that htere are alot of different slings and pouches out htere. there are the ring slings, which offer you the flexability of changing the size, but they have a bigger learning curve and have lots of fabric. some ppl don't like all the extra fabric, some love it cause it does provide lots of privacy while nursing. there are wraps, which have a huge learning curve and need to be practiced. the MaiTai which is a simpler wrap. and the pouches, which have the lowest learning curve, but you have to make sure you get the correct size or the pouch will be useless to you. the peanutshells sizing chart is alot easier than most i've seen.

There are TONS of different kinds- I would suggest checking out the babywearer link someone else gave you.
I HATED my Over The Shoulder. The padding was too much, I wanted the extra fabric to be free and not sewn together.

I ended up with one from here: http://www.faeriepants.com/
and I have really loved it. It's comfortable, totally adjustable, and SO long- I use the extra fabric as a cover, I use the whole thing as a blanket sometimes, and... I've even used it as a towel, in a pinch.

Hello! I saw you have received a lot of advice; just thought I would add my suggestion. My best friend absolutely LOVES the Mei Tai (sp?). Her daughter is somewhere around 30-35 pounds and she can still use it with no problem. I saw them online at ellaroo.com, where they have other options as well. They can be expensive online, but are relatively simple to make I think. My friend had hers made by a member of her playgroup. I think there is a pattern available on the internet.
Good luck!

Dear M.,
I briefly used a sling called Nojo baby sling. I found it difficult to use and quickly moved on the the Baby Bjorn. My son did not like facing me, he only was happy faced out the other way. I had planned on "wearing" my son in sling but he hated it. There is a new type of sling I saw in a catalog that looks almost like a big banana shaped duffel bag called Sling Rider. Go to www.onestepahead.com It looks really easy to use!! Good luck. K.

With my first, I bought the Over the SHoulder Baby Holder, which is a padded ring sling. It worked well with that baby, but with my second and third, I fond a simple unpadded sling worked better for me. I made my own by buying 2¼ yards of fabric ($1-$2 per yard at Walmard!) and a pair of rings from www.slingrings.com

I started out with a New Native Baby Carrier (which is a pouch) but it was too small by the time he was a couple of months old. Then I used a Hip Hammock (from the original woman who created and handmade each of them personally, not the Playtex copy), but my favorite that I loved and used all the time (ALL the time, my first baby had GERD) was the Zolowear sling:

http://zolowear.com/

I got it in a striped fabric. I had avoided slings before I found these because all the ones I had seen were made of that awful baby fabric, like teddy bears. Mine is like a washed natural fabric with a tiny rose stripe. It's extremely well-made, it's lasted through two babies and still looks almost brand new. I really like the zipper pocket on the front. I would stick my DL, keys and some money in the pocket, and didn't have to carry anything extra when I was just running up to the store.

The pouch did work well when he was tiny. I got that to start because I worried that I wouldn't be able to figure out the ring sling. My son cried all the time, except when he was in the pouch. He would just kind of curl up around my belly, all the way down in the pouch where it was dark, you couldn't see him at all. People came up to me in stores and asked if I had a baby in there. I do think now though, I would go for the sling first because it's so adjustable.

The Zolo Wear site also has a ton of great videos on how to wear your sling or pouch. They cover different positions, different ages of baby and all sorts of situations, like breastfeeding, how to shift them around, put them in or take them out. This link should take you straight to the videos:

http://zolowear.com/Wearing.aspx#2

I've been very happy with my sling. Remember to check the outlet link, they have some pretty good deals sometimes.

I HAVE A PLAYTEX HIP HAMMOCK. IT WORKS GREAT AND YOU CAN USE IT IN EITHER HIP. ALSO, IT'S UNISEX SO MY HUSBAND DOESN'T MIND USING IT EITHER. I FOUND MINE AT TARGET....YOU CAN ALSO GET IT ON EBAY.
