First I tried breathing exercises a therapist taught me, which helped immensely but takes time and focus, which isn't easy to fit into a busy schedule. I went to the PCP and got prescribed Effexor, which I love but have my concerns about if I ever get pregnant again (I'll have to go off and then I'll be crazy all over again!!). I don't like the sexual side effects either, but sometimes I don't mind, it keeps my focus wayyyyyyyyyy off sex! Most importantly, I'm more patient with my son, family and friends, I'm more outgoing, more social, and it takes a lot more to get me stressed.

I too suffer from anxiety/panic attacks. I have actually been admited to the ER 2x's for these. I seem to hyperventalite, which is funny when you really think abt it. Something upsets me so much that I can't breath, high b/p, stomach problems, etc..you name it...I probably have it. I have found out that it is something I have had my whole life, it just didn't appear out of no where. This also tends to be inherited.
My advice to you, you need to see your physician. They are able to prescribe something for you that might help or lessen the symptoms...I have a medication as needed...in which just bringing it with me seems to relieve anxiety. I think I have actually only taken it 3-4 times in months of having it. There are also certain triggers that may set you off. You have to identify those and figure out why it happens.
E-mail me if you would like to chat more...good luck

Hi my name is M. and I also suffer from panic attacks I didn't realize how many people have this, It's called generalized anxiety. I started getting these panic attacks during the night, or when I was on either the bus or subway. I felt like I was about to suffer a heart attack, I finally went to see a therapist and he showed me some breathing technics and gave me medication. I've manage to keep them at bay and rarely have them. My best advice is to seek a therapist before the symptoms get worsed and Good Luck. M. A

Hi C.. You have gotten a lot of feedback, and I hope you feel you are not alone anymore. Quickly I will tell you my story since we don't know what kind of anxiety you have all the advice you can get will help. My panick attacks start with dizziness and lightheadedness, and then I worry that I am going to pass out and my make myself freak! I have sat down in stores thinking I was going to pass out, and asking total strangers for help. Then without passing out I just got over it. However, I hated this feeling. One weekend when my daughter was 1, my parents were away on vacation for two weeks, and my husband had a death in his family, so he had to go away too. The night he was going to leave I started panicking, but i did not know this was the reason. I lost all control of myself, I felt like I could not care for our daughter. I started sweating profusely and dowsing myself with water..I was soaked from head to toe trying to calm myself but not knowing how. I had to have family members come and stay with me because all I wanted to do was lie in bed with a wet cloth.. I would get nauseous..and like I said totally not in control of my body. It was the scariest feeling in my life. I thought I was going to die, or at the very least go insane! My sister made go to my doctor and thank god for her. I tried therapy, but I guess I am the kind of person who needed fast results..I didn't have time to work on my mind. I was prescribed Xanax, and it was a godsend! Whenever I felt a panic coming on I would take one and I would be fine instantly! They gave me the lowest dosage, and I only took it as needed. Since Xanax only lasts about 4 hours, and I was doing a lot of panicking they decided to put me on Celexa once a day and I keep the Xanax for just incase. The meds have really helped me, and I don't intend to stay on them forever. However if I have to I will if it keeps me sane, and able to handle all the stresses in my life. I have heard there are other ways of dealing with anxiety, and if you can do it without meds then more power to you hon. There are some chiropractors out there who have a method to help anxiety. I was diagnosed with anticipatory anxiety, no depression. I expect it, and it comes. It seems so stupid, but it is so real. This was longer than I thought..lol. At any rate, you are NOT alone, and to be honest EVERY woman I know around my age (34) is on some type of meds for this disorder. The best thing for you to know is thatyou do not have to live like this. There are MANY ways to get help, you are not a freak..and I see from all the advice you've gotten from these wonderful people you can choose the best method for you.
Good Luck ..and please write me if you ever need to talk about it!

Hey. your not as you see by your responses. i have clostrophobia, anxiety and panic attacks and since my son was born mood elavations. OH and lets not forget now i dont smoke i quit a year ago and let me tell you no stress release.
but i try calmin my self and i seek holistic therapies. and i have a good support group. Unfortunately it took along time for my family to see that these are real. but luckily my husband understood from the begining. when you feel an attack remember the kids are with you and talk your self down sorta like you have to be the hero so nothin happens while your with your son. try to find a relaxer to keep with you at all times. its very hard and frustrating.

Hi C., you are deffinately not alone, although it feels like it sometimes. I have had severe panic attacks off and on for 30 years. I have been on various medications that have helped but I didn't like the side effects. One that I do carry with me but rarely use is xanax, it's my security blanket,if needed it works quickly. I have been trying relaxation and meditation with some releif, here is a website, it's the works of Dr. Claire Weekes, a pioneer in treating panic disorders, the CD's can be downloaded for free:

I was just posting this same info on another thread... many people don't know that anxiety and panic attacks are also symptoms of estrogen dominance. Do a salivary hormone test and see for yourself. If that's the case, two books that really helped me a lot are "What your doctor may not tell you about premenopause" by John Lee ("PREmenopause" goes from our 20s to our 40s, when we enter "PERImenopause") and "Why am I always so tired" by Ann Louise Gittleman.

Good luck!

Hello C.,

I am a young (41) SAH Grandma...I have had severe panic anxiety disorder for nearly 21 years now...I have found that I too feel depressed a lot as well, but have found great help via medication for the anxiety...I was not wanting to take it for a long while, but in the end felt I was shortchanging myself & family...I know meds are not always the answer, but in my case and its severety it was...I would not have been able to handle the responsibilities of taking over custody of my grand son had I not been on my medication...I guess in a nutshell so to say I still have bad days, but not as many I used to...having someone to talk to that understands is always a big help too...feel free to write if you have any further questions...

Best of luck, R.

C., the good news is that juedging by the number of responses you are not alone. I was recently diagnosed with severe post partum depression as well as an anxiety disorer that causes me to have panic attacks. Now, anyone who knows me knows that I am the most outgoing person in the world and would never have guessed that I suffered from Panic attacks, hell, neither did I. Until I went to my doctor. My panic attacks were manifesting themselves in chest pains. The doctor put me on something for the depression and gave me something dor the anxiety disorder. If you're the kind of person who does not like to take drugs, don't worry, my doctor informed me that although I had to take the depression medication every day, the anxiety pills I could take only when I felt an attack coming on. I've been on them for almost 2 months. He has me on a 3 month cycle then I get reevaluated, so you don't have to worry that you'll be on them forever. It could take as little as a few months or as long as a few years. But there are options available to you that can make your life alot easier.

i was recently diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. i immediatly formed my own little support group that consists of my mom, mother in law, and my best friend. if i start to feel anxious, i call one of them and that helps. i also sing the ABC's to my son a million times and that calms me. anything with my son calms me. i find i get most anxious when ive been stuck in the house for several days or when im really tired, so i either go for a really long walk or take a nap with my son. i really hope this helps. feel free to contact me, as i would love to chit-chat further with you.
