My 3 y.o. has been diagnosed with impetigo on his bump. He had a rash for 4-5 days and after using different OTC ointments and the rash got worse we took him to the pediatrician and was told it is a common skin infection among kids - impetigo. He's been put on Cephalexim orally and an antibiotic ointment and after being on them for almost 48 hrs, there's some improvement in the sense the scabs seem to be gone (there are only few scabs that came out yesterday left on the upper leg)but the red rash is still there. My son says it still itches but poor baby manages not to scratch it. Anyone dealt with this kind of skin infection? Any advices are highly appreciated.

So What Happened?

Sorry for misspelling. I meant "bum" (buttocks).

What's "his bump?" I ask, because some areas can take longer then others to heal. Sensitive skin and areas with take a bit. The itching will take a few more days to improve probably, and the redness will be the last thing to go away. The fact that it's getting better is great, so it's well on the way to healing. Give it a week or two.

I've had impetigo. It takes awhile for the skin and nerves to heal and get back to normal. He should be over it in a week or two. His skin may still be a bit red.

You can call the doctor's office and ask.

My son had it in his nose and on his leg. The nose impetigo turned out to be MRSA, and so we had to take a strong antibiotic for a little longer than normal. But it all healed up and he's fine. Give it a few days for the antibiotic to settle in and you'll notice a big improvement.

I have 4 kids (all grown now), and dealt with that fairly frequently....

Just keep on with the oral antibiotic and ointment to make sure it goes away completely.

It is basically a staph infection, if I remember correctly. One daughter tended to get it frequently, for some reason.. (she is also the one that ended up getting boils, also... don't know why!)

We have been dealing with impetigo for a bit now. We did oral antibiotics and topical and it seemed to go away within a week or so. But now it's back so the ped cultured it and I am making an appt with dermatology. It's around his whole mouth and peeling chunks with sores.

It goes around in child care and schools. It's highly contagious. Picking at it puts the fluids on the skin then what ever he touches will have live critters on it. Then it will spread so be sure and do lots of hand washing and checking every body at bath time to see if there are more area's. The meds usually clear it up in a few days.
