17 Months Chocking on Sippy Cup

We've introduce sippy cup when she was 10 months old. Our problem is she takes too much liquid at one time that she ends up coughing... she doesn't know her limit and I think it goes into the wrong pipe. We've done the 'guide the drink' by pulling the sippy off her mounth once the sprout is in her mouth more than 3 seconds, but she fights us cause she wants to hold the cup by herself. We've tried many different types of sippy cup and it's always the same result.. coughing from too much liquid (milk, water or juice). Any suggestion how to teach her, or is she just not ready for sippy?

Adding note to the question above: She's using the sippy with the valve where she has to suck in order for the liquid to come out.

What can I do next?

Are you using a cup with a valve? Some cups have a valve or some sort of suction tip to prevent the liquid from just pouring out. At 17 months she should have the hang of it now since you started at 10 months. This is something she will have to figure out of her own.

G., she is teething. Shes chewing on the sippy cup making more fluid come out continuously. Try getting her a sippy cup with a hard top so she has to actually suck out the milk/juice and still have something hard to chew on. :)

Are you using hard or soft top sippies?? She could be using it as a teether and then getting too much liquid. I never used the soft top ones with my girls but started with straw sippies, then went to hard top sippies (my 3 year old still chews on them all though). This is something she will have to learn on her own though...all kids do 8-)
Wishing you luck in finding the right cup for her!

Have you tried a straw Sippy cup? Both my kids preferred those first before a reg Sippy cup. Some Sippy cups like Born free have diff tips and if you get the oldest tip they can justbpour liquid out and it might be to much for her.
