My 13 month old daughter has had a high fever for three days now I took her to the doctor and he did blood work and checked her urine. Those were both fine she still had a high fever the next day so we went back and he did a chest x-ray and swabbed for strep both of those were fine. He thinks its a virus can't remember the name where they just run a high fever for 4-5 days this is her second time in two weeks with this. Has anybody else dealt with this and what were you told I hate seeing my kiddos sick and don't know whats wrong. Thanks very tired mom!!!

Actually I kept my niece 2 weeks ago because she came home from school with a high fever. She was out of school for two days. Now my daughter is in the same boat she has had a 102 temp for two days. It's not strep or flu she eats well but still has fever. A local school has cancelled classes for yesterday and today because 78% of the school was out with fevers. It does get better try a cool bath and have her sit around the house with a tanktop and undies on if she covers up with too many clothes or a blanket her fever get worse.

Hi. Well, my daughter had this when she was 5 months and again at close to 7 months. She had a very high fever but everything was fine. My doctor put her on an antibiotic. They told me a fever of over 102 means there is an infection. My pediatrician's response was that the infection isn't horrible, for lack of a better word, if Tylenol takes it down. However, if Tylenol does not take it all the way down, the child needs an antibiotic/something stronger. Otherwise, I think they say 3 days and the fever should start coming down. I think after 3 full days and the fever is still way up there, it's time for an antibiotic!

I would definitely seek a second opinion. I have learned to always trust my instincts when it comes to my children, no matter what the doctor says. My daughter was constantly throwing up her formula, and I was told it was just acid reflux. I finally realized I had to make the doctors do something, and she was very near death when they finally diagnosed her with pyloric stenosis. If you have a gut feeling the doctor may be wrong, just trust yourself. Good Luck!

My sister went through this with her daughter and it has continued for six years, she has been told there is no medication to help as it is a virus. Luckily, unless the fever gets really high, her daughter functions normally. Unfortantly, schools do not allow your children to go until the fever has broke for twenty-four hours. My neice has misssed a lot of school. I wish I had something more helpful for you. The doctor did tell my sister that eventually she would grow out of it.

Hey there S.!

My 7 month old is going through the exact same thing and it could be one of a thousand things, you know? Have you thought about teething? My oldest ran such high fevers when he was cutting teeth. Our pediatrician told us that little ones that have a fever that's 103 or under is nothing to worry about. That's just their body's way of getting rid of the virus or infection. We have been alternating with tylenol and motrin and have been putting a cool cloth on his head. I have also been giving him that yo baby yogurt or the danimals. Yogurt has that good bacteria in it. It seems to help. Listen to your instincts. If you are still not satisfied with your childs progress keep taking her back to the doctor. Mothers intuition is always right. You are paying the doctor so technically the Doc works for you. Good luck!

Give them popcycles to help reduce the fever and make sure you dont blanket them or that keeps the heat in. If it continues ER. They are more apt to run more tests. There are viruses going around. Cool baths and then dry well also.

Did they also check her ears? My son had the same thing, over they phone they were saying he just has a virus & it needs to run it's course but I took him in and sure enough he had the beginning of two ear infections!!!

Take care! It is so heartbreaking to see your babies sick & not wanting to play! I sure hope she gets better quick!

Both of my daughters have had it. They both ran high fevers for four days with no other symptoms. I would give them Motrin or Tylenol and the fever would break but by the fourth hour (almost time for the next dose) they would be burning up again. Once the fever broke they were fine. I was told it was a virus as well. With my younger daughter, this all happened back in October. After the fever week, she was fine for a couple weeks then started with cold like symptoms plus a cough. Still viral is what I was told and got no meds. This went on throughout the holidays, she'd be sick, then get a little better, then be sick again. The Saturday after the new year we wound up in the ER because her throat was hurting and swollen. Since the first of the year we made two trips to the ER for her throat and three trips to her pediatrician. All strep tests were negative. I finally got fed up and took her to an ENT. Turns out she has tonsilitis, so we are now on medication for a month. After that month if her tonsils are still swollen then we be having them removed. My point here is this, if you're getting no where with the pediatrician and she has other symptoms, try an ENT dr. Yes, it's something viral but there's got to be a reason the infection is there and causing what it is. The way my ENT dr. explained it to me was "Pediatricians see so many kids with the same symptoms, they all just assume it's a cold virus of sorts". They're not treating what is really causing the virus. Good Luck to you, I know what you're feeling.

If its a virus it just needs to run its course, the things you can do to help your baby feel better, make sure she is well hydrated, and take a cool cloth to the back of her neck and head, to help get the temp down.

It sucks when the kiddos are sick, you just wish a kiss could heal them.

Hope she feels better soon.

My 3 year old (5th child) suffered from what is called FUOs (fevers of unknown origin) from 5 months to 18 months old. She would spike a fever all the way up to 107 for several days. She would act normal, eat, drink, play, and be a normal infant. They did all those tests as well as immunology and genetic tests and ALL came back normal. One dr told me that some children are born with a "very sensitive thermostat" and even if they get the smallest virus, it can shoot their temp up really high. Don't worry. She will grow out of it. My daughter did. Also, it is possible (and normal) for a child with a very high temp to have a seisure, and while it is scary while it is happening, it does NO DAMAGE to the child. Also, my geneticist told me that children DO NOT DIE OF HIGH TEMPS (although adults can). I hope that sets your mind at ease. It is VERY scarey when you have a child with a very high temp and there is NOTHING you can do about it and the drs have no answers. I would suggest that if the temp makes her miserable, just give her half a dose of otc fever reducer. Just to bring it down a little, but let the temp do its job and burn out the "bug" that she is fighting. I really hope that helps. ~A.~ (Mom of 6 going on 7)

My family is going through the same thing. It started with chest tightening then high fever (mine 4 days at 101 my son 4 days at 103 and daughter at 102.) The Dr. said it was a virus and nothing they could do. The fever finally broke and now we are left with a nasty mucus cough. It completely whipes out your energy and you just don't want to do anything. Just continue with tylenol and ibuprofen and it should start to get better.

Hi S.-
My daughter went through a period when she was around 7 months old where she had a really high fever, didn't want to eat, and was extremely fussy and uncomfortable. Took her to the doctor and they did the same thing ie: bloodwork, throat swab, etc. Didn't find anything wrong and sent us home with hardly an explanation. A week later, she broke out in a really bad rash, so we rushed her to urgent care where they diagnosed her with the virus Roseola. You might look it up on Google and see if that coincides with the symptoms-hope this helps!! Good luck!

My 2 1/2 year old just got over a fever like that. She had around a 102 degree fever and it lasted for a little over a week. No other symptoms just a fever. It would act like it was gone but the next day there it was again. I just had her rest a lot more than normal and kept my eye on the fever to make sure it didn't go too far. Friends of mine that still live in Missouri said all their kids were sick as well. I think there is something going around. Be sure to keep the thermostat on or below 68 degrees so the germs can die also. Keep an eye on the fever and good luck. Sick kids are no fun:)

I live in the KC area and my daughter along with all the kids at school had the same bug, it started out as a bug that lasted for several days and the kids were miserable, when it came back it was due to the drainage and it was double ear infections in ALL the kids. Remember an ear infection can happen overnight, your child is at the teething age as well which can cause a fever, my daughter would get an ear infection and cold and fever almost everytime she got a tooth in. I would take your child back in and have them check the ears! Good LUCK

My daughter got both of those virus within 60 days so I know how you feel. Both times she had a high fever for 5 to 6 days and then she was fine. She drank alot of Gatorade to keep her hydrated. She also got an ear infection after both fever episodes so keep watch.

My son had Roseola at 12 to 13 months. Very high fever for 3 days, then broke out in a rash all over his body. Then this Jan. at 14 months, he had fever running from 99-101 off and on for almost 4 weeks. They ran all the same test you had except the x-ray. They diagnosed an early ear infection and hand foot and mouth disease in the first week, but the rest of the time, they just said it was a virus running through his system. He acted fine through the whole thing except a couple of days that first week. Eventually his temps came down. Today, just 3 weeks since his temps have been normal, he spike up to 101.9. Took him to the doc today. They say it is just another virus. Very frustrating, but he seems to bounce back from them. Good luck with your daughter!

I know exactly what you are going through. I took my 14 month old in yesterday for a high fever, 5th time in 7 weeks. When she gets this fever it is usually right around 101, yesterday it got up to 103.6. Of course I keep getting told it is the virus that is going around. She is on antibiotics, again, and we are alternating between Motrin and Tylenol. Last night I gave her a popsicle, it really dropped her fever. I just made sure that she didn't start shivering. Really I don't have much advice, just the popsicle, it seemed to help. Good luck!

I am not sure if they still make them now that infant medications are being pulled off the market but I used suppositories that reduced a fever, ask your pharmacy. Also for dehydration try freezing pedia light into popcicles and then crushing them up and feeding those to your little love.

There is a flu going around that does that. Keep her well hydrated during fever. Problem is, they can easily get secondary infections, so watch for that. Also, consider a pediatrician. Pay attention to your mommy sense, if it isn't right, PESTER them until you get answers. I have never felt so comforted by having a pediatrician available 24/7. They are used to these questions, and are good about re-assuring and never make you feel like you are bugging them. I use Mid-Kansas Pediatrics in Wichita, and couldn't be happier with their skill level and service. They have both east and west offices and have a sick clinic every saturday. I hope your child gets well fast - I know how scary it is!

I am a FT working mom, 3 boys, 19 months apart. My husband has never been any help, and I can relate to TIRED MOM - My first child was born at 40.
