When to Potty Train? - Rockaway Park,NY

I have twin girls, almost 18 months old. One of my daughters is constantly taking off her diaper and examining her "bits and pieces". Is that a sign that she's ready to potty train? Any recommendations about how to start would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

Hi,K.. I tried to potty train my daughter when she was about 10 months old, and EVERY time i put her on the potty, she would go pee, but with the 1 poop she tried standing in the middle...so right off the bat, i'll tell you to be patient (from what i'm told, they feel it's a part of them, and sometimes it takes awhile for them to get that part down and relax and let it just happen). when i started her at 10 months w/in a couple days she stopped sleeping through the nights, and a few days later a friend told me to stop immediately. she said statistics show that if you train a child before 18 months it tends to take much longer, but if you start around that age, it's easier for them. i will be starting again within the month (as she will be 18 months next month). i was told that the best way is to bring them to the potty every 30 min or so (whether they need to go or not). if they go, clap and say how good that way, and how they're a big girl...but if they don't, just say, that's ok...maybe next time. give them a couple minutes to sit there and see what happens (if you do it in the bathroom, turn the water on...that will help them go, at least that's what happens when my daughter hears running water and has no diaper on lol) once she starts going and you notice that they're not going in their diapers have them pick out their own panties, but until then, i would go with what's easier for you whether it be diapers or pullups. i'm not sure how easy or hard it is for them to pull them up and down. my daughter doesn't quite pull of her pants on her own, only loosely fitting pants/shorts, but she can pull off her diaper. you can always pick up a pack and see where it goes. well, good luck with the training, and if you find the trick that works right, let us know (i'd especially like to know if any of the tricks i was told about work or not).

Hi,
I have an almost 4 year old and just turned 2 year old. Both are girls. Potty training really depends on the readiness of the child and if they can stay dry through a nap. My two year old started to take off her diaper and tell me she wanted to go pee pee and examined herself at 18months even played with her poop whilst in the crib (that part lasted two weeks)all this when she was 18 months. I knew she wasn't ready nor was I (I didn't have the tolerance to go through the process at that time)because every time I put her on the potty she wanted to play with the toilet paper). Now she just turned two and I am actively training her. She does poops on the potty and pees but I keep a pull up on her throughout the day. After naps, I take her to the potty but it' pretty low key training with her.

As for my oldest,I told her when she was 2 1/2 that she's a big girl now and it's time to learn to potty. I showed her this is where we go potty. (It's important if you start training to not plan to go anywhere for a few days so that you can just focus on this). I just made sure she went to the bathroom every 45 minutes filling her up with lots of water and juice so she felt the feeling of being full.I would say "oh, let's go to the potty". If she said "nothing's coming" I made up a song and a little jingle of some sort " Oh, pee, pee, it's time to wake up! (Because I told her maybe it's just sleeping and that's why it won't come out). The song was " pee pee in the potty not in my panty's, not in my pull up only in the toilet" ( to the beat of cha, cha, cha, cha) I know a little corny but surprisingly my girls love it and sing it every time they need to go to the potty. Treats are sometimes recommended as a reward but that didn't work for my oldest she preferred the verbal praise.

GOOD LUCK! Just be prepared for lots of accidents.

When they start taking off their diaper that means they are ready. Start with the one that is examining her "bits and pieces" the other will follow because she will want to follow her sister. What I did was have my son pick out underwear he liked. I made him feel like a "big boy." There will be plenty of accidents, trust me. Have her sit on the potty with a book and when she goes make a big deal. Make sure both twins are part of the process. You'll have them both trained in no time.

Hi K.

I beleive you should have started by now. I started my kids at 15 months and they were boys. It took me until they were 25 months before it took but, i hung in there and that's the key. One started the same thing and i brought a potty and we started
with no pamper, underwear. But i see they have pull-ups. To me pull-ups are pampers to me it feel the same when wet. I used underwear why not try panties and keep putting them on. you get it. Keep on explaing when you go to the bathroom take them, show them what big girls do. This is a job that take patients and consistancy woman. It may get hard but, you hang in their. They are girls so they may enjoy it. Allmost forgot
check all pull-ups at night to see who wets the most and set a time for night along with the aralem for night vists to the potty or the toilet. I use a ladderpotty for my boys, they love to climb the steps, and the cheerios i threw in the toilet these are some of my potty traning fun. good luck and keep the faith. Let me know how things are going woman

I've read that 18 months is the start of body exploring stage. Toddlers are naturally curios about their bodies, and their p****** p**** are no different to them than another part of their body. I could be wrong, but I don't think this is a sign that she's ready for potty training.

certainley sounds to me like she is ready. buy hersome purty big girl panties.keep potty seat where she can always get to it. and nothing works better than praise and reassurance. throw a big commotion when she does it. my son trained at this age. and the peepee was easier than the poopy but as long as i stayed with him, and made a huge happy fuss for his good behavior it motivated hime to continue all the great work. best of luck to you!
