When Do Most Babies Crawl By?

My daughter is 8 months 4 weeks old and she's really making "strides" (but not really real strides!) in being mobile. But I was wondering, when do most babies start to really crawl? I know every baby is different... but the babies I know (3 boys and 2 girls) around my daughters age are all already crawling! I know she will be "soon"... and doctor isn't concerned... but was just curious about real world moms thoughts!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Today, she's 9 months 1 week old and pushes herself off with her toes and arms, which started just a few days ago... it's so funny, she looks like a little snake!

Most milestones you just CAN'T compare to others because babies vary SO much. My son crawled at 9 months and my daughter at almost 11. They both walked at 14 and are completely active, smart, healthy kids. Some kids are more motivated than others to learn physical milestones, and other kids excel more at academic milestones. Try not to compare and definitely don't worry!! In fact, ENJOY her not being mobile for as long as you can! :)

Some don't ever crawl just go straight to walking which is part of the reason that they don't use it as a true milestone. My oldest waited till 11 months my youngest was about 7 or 8 months. When it came to walking my oldest waited till 15 months and and the youngest was off and running by 11 months he's 21 months old now and has no fear! Be grateful for the un-mobile ;-)

My daughter will be 8 mos next week, and has been crawling for about 3 weeks. She is also pulling up. Both happened at the same time. However, my son never did the traditional crawl. He scooted and rolled, but never crawled- maybe because he could get to where he wanted in another manner. He went straight to walking at around 11 mos. Don't worry about it. She'll figure out how to get where she needs to eventually!

Ah, I remember thinking the same thing, when is he going to crawl. My son was close to 10 months and he never really crawled he did this scoot thing where he would use one leg and one arm. I've heard people refer to it as the "commando crawl" He didn't walk until he was almost 15 months. Now he is almost 4 and is very coordinated. Quite the runner, climber and jumper!

Go on Babycenter. They answer all these questions and have discussion groups for your baby's age. That way you can ask mom's who are going through each phase what THEY think normal is.

If this is your first baby she will probably be later to do things than babies that have siblings. My 1st crawled around 7 months and walked right at 12 months. My second crawled at 5 months was pulling up on furniture and cruising at 6 months and walked at 7 months. My 3rd who just turned a year started trying to crawl at 3 months, was very good at crawling by 4 months, and started walking at 8 months and now runs. The second and third had someone else to keep up with.

LOL well my current 11 month old started crawling probably around 7-8 months. My toddler on the other hand didn't actually crawl until she was 13 months. It was because my toddler has strabismus and couldn't see (it's an eye disorder where they cross them inwards). My toddler didn't walk either until she was 20 months. My 11 month old will be walking here in a month or so probably. Every kid is different and yours may be one where she completely passes crawling and goes straight to walking. I would have loved my kids to do this. I hate the crawling stage because they find every possible morsal of food or whatever on the floors. So I am constantly sweeping and mopping (2 times a week) the floors and always disinfecting everything!!!!!

I think anywhere between 6 and 12 months is the "normal" range.......I don't think you have anything to worry about.

The average is anywhere between 6-12 months. It depends on the child. Your child being 9 months (8 mos + 4 weeks = 9 months) and just learning to crawl is perfectly average and normal.

Mine were both 9 to 10 months. Perfectly normal.

And they both started walking between 13 and 14 months. Also perfectly normal.

A lot of the answers below are on the early side.

Do you her play on the floor? If not, put her there on her tummy and she will do the rest. My husband used to hold and carry our daughter all the time and never put her down. He thought the floor was too dirty for a baby, even though I vacuumed and sweep daily. As a result, she was delayed in sitting up! Once he realized that his holding her all the time was stiffling development, (his nephew the same age was crawling and when our daughter was just kicking and giggling) he started playing with her on the floor.

Mine never did the hands and knees crawl. She was strictly an army crawler.
