Hi T.. Have you heard of Shaklee? I have been using Shaklee since my mom conceived me. I am 30 and am still loving it. I not only use the cleaning products, but also use the Meadow Blend soap and take the vitamins. I have two children 8 and 5, and am very aware of how cleaning products make my kids feel. Even my husband loves Shaklee. Look it up. Everything is Kosher.
I would love to hear back from you if you do look into Shaklee, and what you think of it. :)

There are over 100 different harmful chemicals in over 60 everyday household cleaners. Any one of them could be fatal to your baby. Cancer and Asthma and Learning Disabilities are on the rise in this country and scientist are linking them to harmful chemicals in the home. There are a number of green products on the market but I would recommend Melaleuca because besides removing all the harmful chemicals, many of the products have melaleuca oil (you may know it as tea tree oil) in them that is very good for you. I would love to talk to you about Melaleuca. Please email me at ____@____.com so I can tell you about all the benefits of these products.

Trader Joes has non-toxic products at reasonable prices. The truth is, though, the non-toxic stuff is less harsh and does not work as well as the toxic stuff. My advice would be to use the non-toxic ones while your pregnant and as soon as you have the baby go back to the toxic stuff. At least, that's what I did. Now I make my own cleaning supplies and they work just as well as the store bought stuff, but I save a bundle. If you are interested in making your own (once the baby is born, of course) there is a very helpful article which tells you how at http://southbayparentsonline.com/2008/01/19/frugalicious..... Best wishes and enjoy your pregnancy!

You can use Dr Bronner's Castile Soap - www.drbronner.com. Sold at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and I'm sure it's around in several other stores. It's multi-purpose & completely ALL natural.

Another great option is white vinegar. Fill a spray bottle with 1/2 white vinegar & 1/2 water. You should google it! Vinegar can clean so many things. Check out apple cider vinegar too.

I highly recommend going to Henry's or Trader Joe's and buying some cleaning supplies. They are much more pleasant to clean with and won't give you cancer/other health problems or affect your unborn baby. I use a liquid cleaner (it's green) from Trader Joe's for almost everything. I also use Bon Ami instead of Ajax/Comet which you can buy at Target. Seventh Generation is a great brand and can be purchased at Henry's. Take care, hope this helps.

My favorite cleaners to use are "Advantage" or hydrogen peroxide. There is no smell to peroxide and if it can be put on an open wound....plus it's so very cheap. I just put straight peroxide in a little spray bottle. Some people add water and that's ok but if you add water then it's really only good for that day of cleaning.

Hello T.,
I was in the exact same situation when I was pregnant...nervous about cleaners. I found Melaleuca, the Wellness Company. They have a lot more than just cleaning products, but everything they make is completely safe, non-toxic and environmentally resposible as well. The best part is they really work and their prices are far more reasonable than the "safe" stuff I found in the grocery stores. If you have a chance, check out their website www.melaleuca.com and see all they have to make shopping more convenient. You shop online and it's delivered to your door by UPS!!! The other website I would recommend is www.saferforyourhome.com where you will find detailed descriptions and price/product comparisons regarding ALL the safe cleaning products found in Melaleuca's EcoSense line of cleaners. I hope this helps. If you want more information or just want to chat about products, feel free to call me at ###-###-####. A.

I've also been concerned lately with using toxic cleaners. I recently was introduced by my neighbor to products from a company in Idaho that sells cleaning products with no poisons, no phosphates, and no chlorine bleaches. I have tried them and they work really well. You can also make your own products. I just read something on Do It Yourself network about making your own cleaning products.

Aloha T.. Congratulations on your new baby! I am also a first-time mom - my daughter is a little over 13 months old now and absolutely wonderful! Anyhoo, I was also concerned about using standard cleaners while pregnant then also around my daughter. I switch to using Simple Green (Costco and City Mill) and Seventh Generation (you can find them in natural foods stores and at gaiam.com). We don't have a Target or Whole Foods here in Hawai`i yet so I bought my products online. There was another product that I saw in a Parenting magazine ad but I haven't tried that one yet - the ad was brightly colored and the product comes in different scents. I also cleaned with gloves while pregnant and nursing. My husband and my sister had helped a lot by cleaning tough jobs so I didn't have to bend over too much. I've chosen to be "safe than sorry" and the non-toxic and natural products clean just as well (and sometimes better since they don't have harsh fumes, etc). I've seen commercials for a new line of Clorox products that are supposed to be safe around kids and pets but I haven't researched them yet to make sure they're really okay. Anyhoo, I hope this helps.

Hi T.,
I have a 7 month old and I've been using vinegar and water for windows, baking soda for scrubbing and my friend bought me a complete cleaning set from Shaklee. It's also non-toxic and has simple ingredients. Seventh Generation is good too. Stay away from Mrs. Meyers. It says non toxic, blah, blah, blah, but has Sodium Laureth Sulfate, parabens, propylene glycol and 'fragrance" - which contains phthalates!!! The best thing to do is go to www.cosmeticsdatabase.com - especially for your baby products and your skin care products. They rate numerous products on a hazard scale. You will be very surprised. Most of the really great non-toxic products are by obscure brands. But you can do a search for their websites and purchase them to be shipped to you. That's what I did.
Congratulations!

I use (or have my house keepers use) distilled vinegar to clean mostly everything. You can add oils - like lavender, orange, lemon to take the vinegar smell away. It cuts grease and totally safe for my kids to play on the floor. I still use soft scrub original for the toliets and showers. It's great because I really don't have to worry about much and it's cheap! Also, I never have to worry about my kids drinking vinegar, so I have less baby proofing to do. The soft scrub and the bleach are kept up in the laundry cabinet.

Hi T.!

I use a combination of white vinegar and water to clean all kinds of surfaces, like countertops, linoleum floors, and mirrors and windows. It smells like vinegar only til it dries, so don't worry! You can also put a few drops of essential oils in the mix if you want to leave a nice smell behind. You can buy mixes like this, pre made and in spray bottles in health food stores, but it's easy to make your own.

I also use baking soda in place of Comet - it's great for cleaning greasy sinks, stoves, grimy bathtubs, shower doors, shower walls, etc. - plus it makes a great tooth-whitening paste with water or a little peroxide.

To clean, you can make a paste out of the bakind soda and water or just use a wet sponge to pick up a pile of dry soda - it'll stick to the wet sponge and then you can scrub with it. It's so easy and safe that I often scrub the tub and tile while I'm taking a shower!

There's also Dr. Bronner's liquid soaps - you can use these for your body, your hair, your laundry, and anywhere else around the house. It comes in a tall plastic squeeze bottle and they have it at Ralphs and Whole Foods and even some CVS stores now. It comes in a bar soap too, but I think the liquid is more versatile.

I hope this helps - good luck!!

Hi T.-

Congrats on your first baby!! Life is soooo much fun with a little one! I have a little girl, 5 1/2 and she is a riot! Njoy all the moments. They fly by!

I clean my house with the same products my grandmother made: Vinegar, water, baking soda. One large jug of White Vinegar will last you forever! and, it is great for cleaning everything from counters, to mirrors and windows, to mopping hardwood and tiled floors: natural or ceramic. I then use the baking soda to clean the bath and shower. It works well with some lemon juice to clean the grout.

Make a spray bottle of vinegar and water. I do not measure it, I do it by smell. (Some people like more of the vinegar smell and some do not.) -counters, glass, mirror, etc...

Baking soda= can be sprinkled directly onto tub and shower and mixed with some water. If you want, you can add lemon juice to it also. Sometimes I just mix it in a large bowl b4 use.

I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to use natural, edible cleaners. AND- you will save a fortune in supplies by reusing the same bottles, reusing washable rags, etc....

If you would rather purchase products: anything Natural from Jimbos, Trader Joes, Henrys or Whole Foods are great!! LUV Seventh Generation.

I wish you happy cleaning and a speedy delivery!

Hi there- It really depends on your budget. If you go to Whole Foods or Wild Oats or some other health food store like that, most of their cleaners are 'friendlier' than regular grocery stores. I have found 2 great (and inexpensive) books on cleaning frugally and safely, both by Vicki Lansky, who writes about using vinegar and baking soda to clean just about anything. Vinegar kills bacteria, germs, and mold and baking soda is a good non-scratching scrubber.
Non-toxicity will also be an issue after the baby born...good luck!

I don't know where you live, but trader joe's grocery store has pretty good products that are all natural. So if there is no tj's, any store that carries 'health food' will have a section for cleaning products.
2 things you won't be living without are vinegar and baking soda. google those words with cleaning and there will be 300 years worth of home cleaning tips.
Baking soda is even great for exfoliating your skin. Put some in the cup of your hand and mix it with warm water, so where it's a paste. Gently rub onto your face and rinse. It can also be used on feet or wherever skin is rough. It is better than anything on the market.
take care.

There are a number of non-toxic cleaners on the market. Seventh Generation (seventhgeneration.com) & Meyersmrsmeyers.com) are a couple that are sold at both Whole Foods and many major grocery chains. Easiest, and a bit less expensive than that would be Method. You can find Method product at Target. You can also purchase either brand (among others) on drugstore.com and amazon.com. All of them produce household cleaning products as well as laundry products. Clorox apparently has a "green brand" on the market, but I don't know if I would trust Clorox!

There are so many great alternatives out there now, but the easiest and most economical thing to do is make your own cleaners. There are lots of great books like Clean House Clean Planet by Karen Logan. If you google home-made cleaner recipes I'm sure you'll come up with some good finds too. Some easy switches are using club soda for glass cleaner. Just put plain club soda in a spray bottle and you're set to go. I use white vinegar for lots of things like fabric softener (use like Downy),wiping down my shower walls, and cleaning hard water off my faucets. You can make an all-purpose cleaner using castile soap, tea tree oil, and water. If you're wondering what castile soap is then look up Dr. Bronner's soaps. My favorite new thing I found was ChemFree toilet bowl cleaners. The toilet is the hardest thing to clean with non-toxic cleaners. The ChemFree toilet cleaners have amazed me, so check them out. Good luck. It's not as daunting as it seems.

Method (www.methodhome.com) is non-toxic, which we use for premium surfaces like the Daily Granite to clean our sealed granite and marble, and the cleaners for stainless steel, leather, and wood.

I like Mrs. Meyers Clean Day All Purpose Cleaner (www.mrsmeyers.com) for all non-porous surfaces such as finished wood and tile floors, countertops, walls, porcelain, bathroom fixtures, sealed natural and synthetic stone. Simple Green (www.simplegreen.com) also works great as an all-purpose cleaner!

For glass, mirrors, and chrome, Seventh Generation Free and Clear Glass and Surface Cleaner (www.seventhgeneration.com) works pretty good for those and other hard surfaces around the house.

Bon Ami Polishing Cleanser (www.bonami.com) is a good non-abrasive cleanser for just about everything except windows and mirrors, but is good for sinks, tubs, cookware, tile, painted wood, and is especially useful on splatters, spills, burned-on grease and baked-on food.

Some inexpensive alternatives to try are 2 tbsp of mild dishwashing soap like Ivory mixed with 4 cups water for an all-purpose cleanser, and white distilled vinegar mixed with water work well as a glass cleaner to clean glass and mirrors.

I have recently gotten rid of almost all "cleaners" in my house because of the harsh chemicals. I clean everything with Vinegar and Water and sometimes a little Borax. There are lots of sites that tell you how to use the vinegar and water and what strength of vinegar to use when cleaning specific things. I mostly use a 50/50 solution and add in a few drops of Rose or Lavendar oil into the bottle to help with the vinegar smell.

Benefits of Vinegar:
No harsh chemicals
Easy to find
And VERY CHEAP! (You will need to save that money to buy diapers :D )

You can buy Borax at most grocery stores. I found it in bulk at Costco for like $8.

I went through all my cleaning supplies a few months ago and either threw away or gave away everything. Since you can use Vinegar, Water, and Borax to clean everything in the house I don't need that cleaning stuff anymore.

Good Luck and Congratulations on your baby.

Unsure what others have responded, as I have not read them (I have a 3yr old that keps me quite busy)! .....I do however know that the website for Nutribiotic Grapefruitseed Extract can give you tons of info. on how to concoct your own "toxic free" arsenal (there is also a helpful book: "Clean & Green", but have found the simplest info from Nutribiotic ....especially after my son had "Rotavirus" (very scary)! .....Hope this helps!

Hi,

I am surprised at how well good old baking soda cleans. I use baking soda to clean my stove top. I use Alcohol to clean the bathroom floor and toilet. Windex cleans carpets and counter tops and a non-alcohol window cleaner for the windows or just a drop of liquid soap in a bucket of water does just fine. Good luck.

Seventh Generation makes non-toxic cleaning products that I buy from Whole Foods (some regular grocery stores sell them too, but they're a little more expensive.) Cleaning with vinegar works too. When I was pregnant, I just left the cleaning to my husband. I didn't buy the non-toxic products until after my baby was born, so don't worry too much. My son was/is completely healthy! Congratulations and good luck!

Looks like you are going to have lots of fun looking up these websites and researching products. Once you go "green" with the products in your home, you might wonder about the stuff you are using on your body, shampoo, soap, etc.. I did, and what I found out was really interesting. All the man made chemicals we are exposed to are really having a bad effect on our health. Here is a website that can be a help when you want to look up a product or ingredient while you are learning about all this http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/

There are a lot of different great non toxic cleaners out there. Target sells a brand called "Method". You can find "Seventh Generation" products at your local health food stores. Melaleuca is another great company. You can even make the cleaners yourself, it's very easy and inexpensive. Many of the recipes you can find online. Most consist of Baking Soda, White Distilled Vinegar, Lemon Juice, and dish detergent. There are some great books to help you out too. One of my favorites is "Clean House Clean Planet" by Karen Logan. It has recipes for everything, as well as other recommended brands you can purchase and where. Hope this helps, I think it's great you are making the switch!

Congrats on the New Baby T.!

I have always been aware of toxic chemicals in cleaning products. Heere are some of the products I have used. Method sold at Target, I like the multi-purpose cleaner, and tub and shower cleaners. My favorite is the pink/grapefruit. I also have used Seventh Generation products sold at Henry's Market but also found it sold at Target recently. It is expensive at Henry's unless it is on sale. I really like the bathroom cleaner for tubs. Trader Joe's has some good non-toxic cleaners and soaps at a good price. I have tried the multi-purpose cleaner cedarwood-sage along with their liquid hand soap and dish soap. I love the smell of it, and it works great. I also just picked up some Clorox Green works dilutable cleaner and it seems to do the job. I use it diluted in a spray bottle to clean the counters, walls, doors ects. Use it undiluted on my stove and in the sink Put in bucket to clean floors. I have to wonder why Clorox hadn't offered this before, are they just jumping on the band wagon?
For laundry we use Method baby laundry soap. But have found Dreft stain spray the best for baby stains. My daughter uses the Dreft spray and then the Method baby laundry soap with a extra rinse cycle. Have a LG front loading machine which uses less water. The grand daughter isn't so messy as before so we don't have to use so much Dreft stain remover. I love the Arm and Hammer Essentials Laundry Soap that is Eco-friendly and really cleans my clothing. Have found it at Target on sale $3.00 most of the time it runs around $3.50. Have tried Method and Seventh Generation laundry soap and didn't clean and smell as fresh and more expensive.
Along with the above cleaning products have used. I use vinegar for glass cleaning and removing water build up on chrome and windows outside. Borax added to laundry soap for a boost and it can be used for cleaning tubs, drain clogs and other thing listed on the box. Also as an ant killer when mixed with syrup and put in a jar. Baking soda is great for cleaning too. Add it to my laundry and it softens the water and helps take out soap build up in clothing. I sprinkle a little on my dogs and brush them out and it takes away the doggy smell when I can't bath them. Hydrogen Peroxide can also be used for cleaning. I also have bought books and found books at the library with natural cleaning solutions. There are also online sites you might want to check out for different ideas.
One more thing that hasn't got anything to do with being a cleaning product. I bought an Oreck vacuum 3 months ago and LOVE IT!!!! I am in my 50's with a neck and back issue and have owned several vacuum and this is the best one I have every owned! I got the XL 21 with the 21 year warrenty! Along with it I got the carry along canister vacuum and then the rechargeable electric broom vacuum. Where I bought it at it was the choice over the iron. I went home and two hours later found out the I was going to lose my job in two weeks and really thought about taking it back as it has a 30 day return no questions asked. After I tried it out for about 20 minutes I would eat beans for months to keep these 3 vacuums if I had to. This is just my own personnel recommendation for any one that is looking for a vacuum in the future. I have owned 4 Hoovers, 2 Bissels, 1 Panasonic, 1 Sears, 1 Kirby 1 Eureka 1 Dirty Devil and not a one cleaned and was light weight like the Oreck vacuums. I love the little electric broom because it is fast for quick clean ups and it gets up dog and cat hair! I have had family and friends that had purchased Orecks and had told me how much they loved them. I am not one to go spend money on anything unless I really check it out. I noticed a big difference in the dust in my house too.
As you can tell I like to clean as it is our hobby as my sister and I say. I hope this gives you some help with choosing some cleaning products and lots of time to spend with your new baby when it arrives.

Yes, I know the perfect cleaners. They are Melaleuca. I met a lady who sells them and is passionate about them. She had a new baby and didn't want toxic cleaners either. You wouldn't believe what all is toxic in our home (even baby shampoos). I've learned so much from her. I love Melaleuca and know they are completely safe as melaleuca is the australian tea tree oil. Here's some info she sent me to give to one of my friends:
Her name is Andrea:

Hello, I would really enjoy the chance to speak to you so we can discuss toxins in your home and possible health issues you or someone you know could be experiencing. The company I work with, Melaleuca, the Wellness Company, manufactures products that are safer and more effective than grocery store brands. They also create products for a myriad of health issues.

I would appreciate the opportunity to share with you a little more about the concept of “detoxifying” your home to create a safer environment for you and your family. Let me know what your schedule looks like and we can figure out a time that would work best. Are mornings or evenings better for you to talk?
If you get the chance you will want to check out these two websites:
www.melaleuca.com - this website lists and shows pictures for all the products they offer (the Product Store is quite big, just to warn you they have close to 400 products).
www.saferforyourhome.com - this website is strictly about their EcoSense line of cleaning products. It describes how much safer and more effective the products are by using price/product comparisons and demonstrations. It is great!

Hope this helps. It sure has helped me. I've noticed my daughter no longer sneezes all the time.
Take care,
C. Senese

Hi, T., it's nice to meet you ...

I've been working with expectant couples for the past 26 years as a health educator. I love the "business of babies"! As far as household cleaners go, the fumes can be very strong sometimes and some products are potentially toxic. So always lean toward the side of caution ... just to be safe. Clorox has a brand new line of "Green" cleaners that I'm sure you can find on the shelf at your local grocery store or discount department store.

Take care, drink plenty of fluids, and eat your Veggies!

I use the all-purpose spray on the kitchen counters daily. I use the wood wipes on the tables and the granite and stainless-steel wipes in the kitchen. I use the wood cleaner on the floors and the leather-wipes to clean the seats of my car as well as clean shoes and purses. It is great. Smells wonderful and is good for the planet. I like the method products from Target. They have nice scents like lavender and are non toxic. I use their cleaning wipes, dishsoap, and spray.

I also found that vinegar works well especially in the kitchen and on floors. You'll find when your little one starts crawling that you definitely don't want the chemical cleaners on your floors. Vinegar cuts grease and grime and the smell goes away when the floor has dries. Dilute it in water first.

I'd try either organic or "green" products. Even companies like Clorox are starting to make safer products. Also, your doctor might know of some products that are safe during pregnancy.
I used regular cleaners for my home during all three of my pregnancies and had happy healthy babies all three times. I think that some people tend to be overly cautious about the things around them while they are pregnant and forget that women have been giving birth for millions of years without any kind of care at all. As long as you're not drinking the products and you wash your hands after cleaning, you should be fine. Good luck on the birth of your baby. :)

Hi,

I have a one year old and I also began using environmentally friendly cleaners back when I was pregnant. I use Shaklee and I LOVE it. I clean the bathrooms with the door shut, they are that odorless and nontoxic. And, they do a great job cleaning. The packaging also limits landfill waste because everything is concentrated. I order my Shaklee stuff online about every three months. It seems a little expensive at first, but the products last so long that you end up saving a lot of money. I spent lots of time using different brands of non toxic cleaners, and last year I finally found Shaklee. The products you can find in retail stores such as Target and Whole Foods work well, but they aren't super concentrated so you will end up spending more money! Shaklee's products are super concentrated so they go a long, long way. And Shaklee's all purpose cleaner, Basic H2, is the best product in the world! It is so much more than just a cleaner. You Google "Shaklee Basic H2 uses" and you'll see what I'm talking about. With the Basic H2 you only need two drops with 16 oz of water and that's your window cleaner. Then 1/4 teaspoon with 16 oz of water for your all purpose cleaner, and 1 1/2 teaspoons with 16 oz of water for your de-greaser. It's best to buy super concentrated products because you are buying less products which in turn helps the environment because there is less waste.
If you purchase the Get Clean Starter Kit you'll be eliminating 108 pounds of packaging from waste landfills. And you will also be eliminating 248 pounds of greenhouse gas! This past year Oprah featured Shaklee products on her show four times and the Get Clean Starter Kit was one of her favorite things.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my Shaklee products...and I know you will too. I love them so much I became a distributor. :)
If you purchase the Get Clean Starter Kit along with a $19.95 lifetime membership, you'll receive 15% off your purchases and I will give you a 3 day, 2 night vacation for 2 to 19 different locations including Las Vegas.

Please let me know if you have any questions on Shaklee's products.

Don't try to be perfect because it will be too much, and just enjoy yourself. It will go by fast, I blinked and my first baby is now 10. You will hear that all the time, it's so true. Anyway, about the cleaning products. I say that every year they (the world) find out something new. Snopes.com is a good place to find out if emails and news, are true or not. I hate when those people say, "Well we did that and we were fine", but you never know the effects of anything, especially chemicals. I would try the Clorox brand that is safe for everything. When I was pregnant the big no no was kitty litter boxes. Anyway, good luck to you. Just don't overdue information you will be overwhelmed and not know which way to go. Take care!! Good Luck!!

Hey Girls -
I've been using the products from Melaleuca for one month now and WOW - I can't even begin to tell you how great they are! I am in love with all of the baby/kid products - especially the shampoo, body wash and bubble baths - they smell delicious! Did you all know that some of the products out there for kids, i.e., Lorel for Kids, have REALLY bad ingredients that can actually cause cancer!!!!

Also, Melaleuca offers a very impressive line of house-cleaners so I switched due to my 6 month old and the fact that she will soon be crawling and I really wanted to ensure that I was cleaning with non-toxic cleaners - stuff that won't 'accidently' hurt her. It is a huge peace of mind.

Call me if you have any questions - I'm not a rep and I don't get any kick-backs - I just really like the products and wanted to share with all of you. I've attached a little more formal info and some dates that you can go and see a presentation - it's seriously an eye-opener!

You can call Eydie Gubner at ###-###-#### to schedule.

I've been using cleaning products put out by the Shaklee corporation for about 20 years now and I am so grateful for them. They are non-toxic, very effective and can be all mixed together if need be and you won't create toxic fumes. With other cleaners you could die if you mixed them together. The company also produces some of the best food suplements on the planet. To purchase them you'd need to contact a sales person in your area or online. To find a sales person in your area (which I prefer since I want to pick my items up rather than have them shipped) look in your yellow pages under vitamins or nutritional supplements since the company is more well known for that. When I was pregnant their vitamins were a life saver and their sales people are often well versed in what certain pregnacy symptoms may call for in the way of vitamin needs. ie. in me I had leg cramps and their calcium magnesium (now named Osteomatrix) took those right away if I took several. It's a great company with very helpful people who really care about your overall health.

It is so easy to go overboard on just about anything -- especially when you are pregnant. However, I find that I need very few cleaning supplies at any time. Try hot water and a good microfiber cloth. I also use a microfiber mop and throw the pads into the washer. I love my steam cleaner. It takes care of most dirt problems. Once in awhile you will need cleanser for a sink stain an occational shot of tilex to get rid of mold. Just use a small amount, ventilate, and quickly leave the room. One bit of advice for when the baby comes -- don't use fabric softner. I have heard from allergy doctors that it is a major allergy source. My grandkids (5 little ones) clothes are very soft without it and look great and so do ours. if there is static electricy, put the regular amount of lotion on your hands and lightly wipe your hands over the clothing.

About me -- Mid-fifties, raised 4 great kids. Don't like housecleaning much so I do it the quickest way possible.

I use some Method products from Target. I also use baking soda and vinegar which are great inexpensive ways to safely clean your home. It amazes me how well they work without burning my eyes and nose like bleach does. If I feel I really need to use bleach or a strong cleaner, I make sure my kids aren't in the house and windows and doors are open. When I was pregnant, my husband handled the cleaning when chemicals were involved. I think it's great that you want to make sure your baby is as healthy as possible.

Hi T.,
You can purchase cleaning products at your local health food store like Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Henrys, or even at Target. Look for products that say non-toxic like Seventh Generation, Method, even Clorox came out with a Green Cleaner. If you have a hard time finding them in stores in your city. Look online at the products I mentioned and I am sure you can order them that way. Good luck, and cheers to you for getting rid of chemicals for your baby!

My 6 year-old helps me clean with the products. They're really safe). I am planning to host a "Spring Cleaning" party this Spring to share info about the products. Also, it can become a great way to make extra income while home with the baby if you decide you want to sell. The website is www.melaleuca.com. These are amazing products you can find in the natural stores; Whole Foods, Mothers, Henry's, etc. Even the grocery stores are starting to carry some of the products. If you sign up on the website they'll send you a bunch of coupons. I personally use them and couldn't be happier. My one tip with them, though, is to buy the dishwashing powder, not the tablets. I've been getting a residue left behind on my dishes, most noticeable on glass, with the tablets that I never got with the powder.

The rest of your products are not "toxic." When I was pregnant I did all of the cleaning with regular cleaning products. (and DS arrived big and perfect) Just be sure you're in a well ventilated area. Emotional stress is much more toxic. Do you think our mothers got away with all of these new "rules" of pregnancy? And we're fine, right?

T., There are a few brands on the market that are biodegradable and non toxic. The ones I use are Method and Seventh Generation. You can find them at Target and in some Grocery stores. Method makes baby laundry detergent and biodegradable dryer sheets, hand soap, dish soap, shower cleaner and so on. Seventh Generation makes a good glass/multi-purpose spray cleaner. I'm pretty sure that you can also go to the company websites and order their products too! After you start to use them you will feel so much better about your contribution to the enviornment and your health, and when the baby comes you won't want to quit using them because there safe to use with children and pets in the home. Go green and congrats on the new addition.

I started using Melaleuca Products about two years ago. When someone came and showed me about all of the toxins in my other cleaning products I boxed the old up right away. I am not trying to sell you anything, but you can only get Melaleuca products through a distributor. You can order at full cost, or become a member, like I did, and get them at preferred member price. Oh, what else I love besides being non-toxic, is you buy 1 bottle, mix it with water and you can get about 3 to 5 bottles of cleanser from 1 concentrated bottle.
If you want more info, reply.

Hi T.,

Well, there are many, many options out there. If you are near a Whole Foods Store or another health food market they will have natural cleaners available to purchase. Ecover is a very solid brand that I trust. I also like Begley's Best among a few others that I can't remember this late at night :). The other option is to make your own at home. I don't have the ingredients list off hand but you can google it or go to any one of the many blogs and websites that have this info. www.momgogreen.com is one that I like. There are so many sources for this information that a quick google search will give you MANY options. I know that with a little water, baking soda, vinegar, tea tree essential oil, and a couple of other things you can pretty much clean anything! The beauty of homemade is that you are also reusing your bottles and you can scent it with any essential oil that pleases you :).

To a happy, healthy pregnancy and beyond!

Hi T.,
I use Melaleuca products, they are kind to the enviroment(which we should all work towards keeping clean for our children's future), and they are SAFE for our homes, because they do not use toxic chemicals. I have been using them for years, and I also sell the products. I have used the products in a cleaning business I had in Michigan, I believe my ex partner is still using them to "clean green". My son is an elementary teacher, and I have switched him over from using bleach to disinfect the classroom,(which is pure poison and does not rinse away), to a botanical disinfectant, which is just as effective and proven to be safer than bleach, as it does not give off toxic fumes, or leave a toxic residue. I can send you a catalog of products, or you can look at the products online. I just love the products, especially the cleaners, laundry soap, toothpaste and the bar soap. I have also found that they are more economical to use than store shelf products. Melaleuca is the safe alternative to use. Let me know and I'll send you some information, I don't think you would be disappointed, I have been very happy with these products. Have a great Sunday!

Before the 40s and 50s, people did not have toxic (not only poisons but also contain estrogen-like ingredients...and they wonder why more women are getting breast cancer) chemicals to clean. At first I started using the typical "green" cleaners on the market when I wanted to cut out toxic cleaners. But then I did more research (just looked on the internet - even Oprah did a show about it) and and found that people used to use vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, etc. to clean. Bon Ami is good too. It's been great! I can clean with my kids present (don't have to send them out of the room to clean) and get a lot more done during the day.

It is true that the more cleaners you can use that don't have phospates, bleach, or other toxic chemicals, the better your home is for you, your family, and your baby. My asthma improved dramatically when we stopped using phospates and bleaches.

There are companies that make safe cleaners like Melaleuca, but that can be an expensive way to go. You can make some cleaners, like kosher salt instead of scouring powder or silver polish, or vinegar and water for window cleaner instead of ammonia cleaners. Vinegar and water is also a great cleaner for wood floors.

There are safe products available at Trader Joes and Wild Oats, such as dish detergent and laundry detergent without phosphates. Raley's also carries these, as well as paper products, diapers, and wipes without bleach.

If you have concerns about chemicals in your home, you may also want to look at carpeting and other synthetics as these are said to give off fumes. Wood floors or tile can help a lot, and is also much easier to keep clean.

For those of us on a budget, some of this is hard to do all at once, but after not using phosphates, bleaches, and other chemicals for several years, I have to say that I don't get sick as often and rarely use my asthma inhalers. Plus, I think I spend a lot less on cleaners, just because I don't have a separate cleaner for each thing in my house.

Hi! I was worried about the same thing when I was pregnant, but no one told me I had to switch out all of my products. I switched out some, but others, like for the bathroom, I didn't. I know those are probably the harshest but what my husband agreed to do was to take over the bathroom cleaning duties for me while I was pregnant. What a wonderful guy! He would open the bathroom window so it would air out quick and wouldn't stink up our bedroom. I would also stay in another part of the house for a little while. I don't know if that is a possibility for you, but I just had to make sure our bathroom was spotless and the arrangement worked for us. I don't trust the "natural" products to get the job done. For the rest of the house, I used grapefruit cleaner for the kitchen and stove top instead of 409 and I found an almond oil spray for our wood furniture. Those worked really well and made the rest of the house smell really nice. I found these products at Target, they have a good selection and good prices. Also, there is a brand called Seventh Generation which works well found at Target. I hope this is helpful and congratulations on your pregnancy! Enjoy every minute of it!

Hi T.. You are right to be concerned. I read in Body & Soul magazine that the pollution in our own home is 5% worse than outside thanks largely to bleach, phosphates, and a whole list of other harsh chemicals that are used in most all household products. As a mom I share your concern and I'm also very concerned about what we humans are doing to the environment, especially our water systems and subsequently marine life, etc. I'm thrilled to say that just 2 months ago I became a marketing rep for Melaleuca(I've been out of the paid workforce/corp. world since my first child was born)! They develop and manufacture products for cleaning, bath and body, natural medicine cabinet products and more. I have done replacement shopping, aka converted my house and love knowing that my family is safer and healthier and that I'm doing at least SOMETHING for the environment. Several of my mom friends have become my Melalueca customers and are very happy with our cleaners,i.e. tub & tile, laundry detergent, etc. My kids are 9 and 6 and so they are old enough to do chores and I'm so happy that they can clean glass and mirrors now without breathing Windex fumes and can clean the bathroom sink without getting Ajax bleach on their skin and in their lungs. All of our products smell light and fresh. Well you can see I'm enthusiastic. Forgive me for going on so long and send a note if I can help you. Most importantly, congratulations on the pregnancy!

Hi T.
I bought green something at Trader Joes. Just ask them and they can tell you. It was nontoxic, but u know what, don't worry so much. When I was pregnant I too, worried about little things, and my doc said it is what you eat and how you take care of your body and self, physically and emotionally that are going to make the difference. Hope that helps and God Bless

Hi T.,

I know I'll late in responding, but I would also recommend looking further than household cleaning products. All those creams, lotions, bath products, etc. you will buy for your baby go directly onto their skin. I have used ewg (see website address below) for understanding whether a product - cleaning or hygenie - is safe for my child and/or myself. They evaluate the chemical make-up of products, and the known links between those chemicals and diseases such as Cancer. I have found this website immensely useful and I have to say that through it I have also learn't that not all "organic" products are safe, and not all standard products are bad... Hope it helps...K. http://www.ewg.org/forparents

I agree with the Ecosense line. Here is their website www.saferforyourhome.com

It's like having a Costco or Sam's club membership so that you can buy safer products like you would at WholeFoods or Trader Joe's but you get them at wholesale. This month they are having a special where the membership is only $14.50 for the year AND you get $100 in FREE products over the next 5 months. I'd love to tell you more.

I am glad to anwser that question. I love cleaning and I do not like the harsh smells of some products. I do use the "Mr. Rooter Degreaser" it smells of oranges and it is bio-degradeable, it is also concentrated so you will have it for a long time. Its Great! You can go to their email and ask how to abtain some, they are my plumber up here in the high desert! They are GREAT! ____@____.com I hope this is good for you!

I like Melaleuca products - all natural with no toxins - but any of the natural products like Mrs. Meyers or other cleaners from Whole Foods are a better choice than commercial products. Melaleuca is less expensive than most others, but you have to buy through (or become) a member to get them, which is what I did just to make it simple. Things like windows and floors can be very effectively cleaned the old-fashioned way with white vinegar and water, so it's worth checking out traditional cleaning methods (or talking to a grandmother) for non-toxic solutions.
Good luck with your coming birth and new baby!
Best,
A.
