Hi moms,
I have a 13 month old baby who is teething. He is getting his eye teeth or canine teeth whatever you want to call them. And he has had diarrhea for the past few days. No fever no other symptoms. I have been giving him starchy foods and no juice to try and harden it up and nothing is working. I was thinking it could be from teething but some people say that teething does cause it and some say it doesnt. I was just wanting to get advice and see if this happened to your babies. But I really do think it's from the teeth but I just want to make sure. I don't think it's worth taking him to the doctor because he is not dehydrated because he has had plenty of wet diapers, and is acting totally normal. But it is happening like 4-5 times a day and the only thing I can think of is his teeth. Well thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you for all your answers and help.

What can I do next?

I remember when this happened to my son. What I ended up doing was getting Florastor for Kids. It's a probiotic (good bacteria that helps balance the bacteria in your stomach). My pediatrician recommended it and it's an over the counter product that you can get at Walgreens or CVS. Just call ahead to make sure they have it in stock. It's a powder that you can put in food or drink.

Whenever my son has stomach issues, I use the Florastor (I put it in some juice) and it seems to help.

My son totally does. Plus, his BM's get acidic, so watch out for diaper sores (more than just diaper rash). You can also try some probiotics. I can't say that they help (it could just be the ebb and flow of teething), but they can't hurt.

Mine always got runny stools when he was teething. I have heard teething doesn't cause this, then I have heard that it does. My experience is that it does.

A few soft stools were common with teething in my kids. A few loose stools is not diarrhea, diarrhea to your pediatricain will be frequency and looseness, causing dehydration, so a trip to the doctor will likely not be helpful at this point unless he starts having many movements an hour.

The acidity can be high in a teething baby, because of all the drool, I suspect. As long as he is acting normaly, and seems happy, just watch out for diaper rash, which we got very easily with the high acid. We had good luck using a hair dryer to keep the rashes at bay, and to dry them up if they got them. Use the dryer after every change, on low or no heat, and get him totally dry before diapering.

The eye teeth are the worst!

Teething does NOT cause diarrhea and does NOT cause fever, even though this myth has been around a long time. When kids teethe, they chew on everything, putting things in their mouth that are covered in germs. The germs then cause an illness, thus fever and/or diarrhea and other symptoms develop. So, since the child has an infection, they need to be treated for it. Now, it doesn't usually warrent a trip to the emergency room, however, calling the doctor and getting the child seen is a good idea if they have a temperature over 100.4 for more than one day. Diarrhea is usually part of a stomach virus, and all you can do is treat the symptoms. No need for a doctor visit unless fever develops or the child gets dehydrated (not making many wet diapers, not having tears when they cry, etc.) The chidren who are teething get sicker because of more exposure to germs. I hope this helps!

My experience was that it does. I have three children and all of them got some sort of diarrhea every time they would teethe. Just continue to make sure he has plenty of liquids.

This was the case with my 2 babes.
During diarrhea days try the BRAT diet (Banana, Rice, Apple, Toast) only.

Add a probiotic for babies ( heath food stores will have nice options)...my 18 month old and 4 year old really like the chewable ones (Renew Life Brand in bears...is a very good one).

AVOID: dairy, juice, and sugary food...just BRAT.

This works well for us.

Please let me know if you try this and how it works for you.

It's NOT a myth, according to my pediatrician. When teething, babies produce lots more saliva. Some drool more and others swallow it instead. The excess saliva causes the loose stools. I won't go into the biology behind it, but it has to do with the intestines passing more water into the BM. I agree with the other posters about the BRAT diet and just wait it out. Good luck, we're in your shoes!!!

I've read that the extra drooling causes it when they are teething. I'm sure it's fine. As long as he's not dehydrated and is acting ok, I wouldn't worry!
