Hi,
I was feeling a little off so I took a pregnancy test and was SURPRISED it came back positive. I haven't worked since having my 10 month old and my husband was laid off in January and still isn't working. We are paying for our insurance but it doesn't include maternity. I hope I can add it on and that they don't consider it a precondition. Anyone know? It's going to be pricey too. Any suggestions out there for not being insured for a baby?
Thanks everyone.

They will consider it a pre-existing condition. You may be able to add it on but there maybe a waiting period, if you call and ask do so without telling them who you are.
You may qualify for medicare or medi-cal I forget what is is called, since you are both not working, it is worth a shot. Yes you may have to swith doctors but maybe not. I was on medi-cal for the birth of my daughter and my sisters doctor who was wonderful took me as a patient and she normally does not take medi-cal patients, it is up to the doctor so if you already have a doctor call them up and ask if they will take you, you never know if you dont ask. I had a great experince with medi-cal and so have others that I know. It really sounds like the most logical way to do it since you have no income. Also look into WIC which is wonderul as well, they do help those in need. Your not asking for welfare just a little help to get you by, don't be to proud the help is there you just need to get it.

If you are in california, go get on medicare and go get on wic. If you aren't in Ca, find out what the public assistance is in your state and get on it. I am pretty sure your insurance will look at it as a precondition and not cover you. I tried that route with my daughter and they wouldn't cover me if I was already pregnant... bums... The other thing you might think about is finding a midwife in your area. You might be able to have a home birth for a lot less than the hospital, but do find out about prenatal care, as that is usually seperate...
Good luck and Congradulations.

First of all congratulations! You must be very scared and stressed. Apply for WIC and medicaid. These assistance programs are in place for your situation. You should easily qualify because you are prego and you have a baby too!
Good luck with everything!

I'm in the same situation in Nevada. If you're in NV, they have the Baby Rose program at the St. rose hospitals which is a set price for the whole thing. But, I have found that the Baby your Baby program is very cheap. It will cost about $3000 for the prenatal care, doctor, and delivery. They probably have a program in your area. You just have to call around to the hospitals and doctors. I know the insurance DOES consider it pre-existing. There is no insurance that will cover you if you are already pregnant. Stay away from this thing called the Maternity Card. It's a bad deal. You can actually talk to your doctor and hospital and usually work something out. Also, if your husband if not working, you should be able to qualify for Medicaid with your state. It's alot of paperwork, but it's worth it because everything would be free and paid for! Good luck!

Hi Chistine, congratulations on your pregnancy! I know many doctors/hospitals will set you up on a payment plan when you don't have insurance. My sister just went through this, and that is what she did. She also signed up with Scentsy to bring in some extra income, and has been using that money to make her payment. If you want to check Scentsy out the link is www.scentsy.com/danacarey it has been great stay at home income for me as well. Good luck!

I prefer to have my babies at home. In Hawaii we have universal healthcare for children and pregnant women. I am a homebirth midwife on the Big Island. A homebirth here will run about $1500 and insurance won't pay for it anyway. Good luck.

Hi christine, congratulation on becoming mom again, like other suggested you are elligiable to apply for emergency medical including WIC program in california which provide you the same care as if you had any other type of insurance. All you need to do first find your provider who has contract with medical in your area.Your other option is to find your desired hospital and find out about their maternity packages.Where i used to work we had these packages ranging from $3000 - $4000 depending of having vaginal or c.section including prenatal care.I am sorry to hear of your life situation and hoping things will get better for you and your husband, please let me know if you have any question regarding emergency medical since our clinic is a medical provider, wish you all the best.
