I am new to the area and am due to deliver my third child soon. I was planning on going to Mckinney Med.Center but just recently I have heard some not so good things about the place. I have heard that Allen Hospital is much better. Has anyone delivered at Mckinney that had a bad experience. I don't know if I should switch to Allen or not.

What can I do next?

I have not had a good experience at that hospital. Infact it was quite bad! I have had good experiences at Plano Medical center.

I delivered my youngest son there nearly 3 years ago and it was fine. My only complaint is that they didn't (probably still don't) have a lactation consultant on staff. Breastfeeding was very important to me and my son and I struggled with it for many weeks. The nurses there tried their best to help, but gave me conflicting information causing more confusion and frustration. I ended up hiring a LC at my own expense after I was discharged from the hospital and my baby started to lose weight. Since then my ped has added a LC to his staff (the same one I'd hired, incidentally!), so if you're ped has one on staff then that may not be an issue for you. Something to check out though if you are planning to breastfeed.

N.,
I delivered my daughter in December last year at McKinney Med. Center, and I couldn't have been more pleased with my entire experience. My nurses were super nice and caring, and they made the experience really comfortable. Also, I was pleased with the size and comfort of the rooms. I had a very good experience, and I plan to deliver there with my next child probably.

I don't know anyone who's delivered there and had a bad experience, but my neighbor almost died because they misdiagnosed him as having a gall bladder problem, but he actually had a ruptured artery. He could have bled to death after they sent him home. Thank God he didn't. They're bad there.

I also had the choice between those two hospitals when I delivered my 2nd a year ago & I choose Presby Allen. Mostly bec. it is part of the Presby system & if there was a major problem with the baby I could easily transfer within the Presby system.

However, I had a terrible experience @ Presby Allen. My husband had to tell them 3 times to come check me & by the time they did I was 9 cm dilated. I did not have time to get drugs or an on call doctor so the L&D nurse delivered my baby. Come to find out they never called my midwife until 30 minutes AFTER I delivered. Needless to say my midwife had a BIG meeting with L&D admin. after that. I am now pregnant #3 & my midwife told me they had one more incident similar to mine @ Presby Allen and the nurse actually got fired (it was the same nurse who messed up in my situation). I will say that I delived soon after they switched their system to having you labor, deliver & recover in one room & having the same nurse for you & baby so I think there was some confusion going on about who was responsible for what. So I am going back there...I figure it is the lesser of two evils as well as the Presby system.

Good luck & welcome to the area!

Hi N.,
I delivered my son in this hospital( in McKinney), in March 2004. I was very pleased with everything. Nurses were excelent, the conditions of the hospital were great as well. I just wasn't as happy with my doctor( Tracey Banks) as I should of but that's a different story.....Love Dr. Jennifer Allen!!!! Anyway, Goodluck!

I have heard good things about that hospital regarding labor and delivery. I think they are trying to give you the best service there, but they may be understaffed. Hire a doula and you will be ok at either place. www.dona.org

I can't directly speak to the service at McKinney, but I delivered at Allen Presby and I had a great experience. The staff was friendly, it was clean, and every need I had was met. I would definitely look into this further as you want to have the best experience possible. (By the way, I chose Allen Presby because I, too, heard some not so good things about McKinney!)

I have been to the emergency room twice at McKinney Medical (not for delivery reasons) and wasn't that impressed with them. I delivered at Presby Plano and loved it! I asked my OB if she would deliver at M.M. b/c it is so close to me (I was worried about not making it to the hospital in time) and she said no b/c they don't have as high level care as Presby Plano. I would say go to Presby Allen b/c like someone else said, if you need something special it would be easier to transfer within the Presby system.

I delivered there in February and had a great experience. The nurses were very attentive, even with the rush of babies delivered that day. There is a lactation consultant and she was SO helpful, even knowing this was my second child. I do not have any complaints---they even encouraged me to stay another night so I could get good rest before going home to my then 14 month old. I had had a hard time sleeping due to a reaction to some medication (I had a c-section although they supported a VBAC if wanted, however my deliveries were SO close I choice not to) so the nurses felt I could use one more night. Gave me a sleeping pill to ensure I slept before going home. I thought it was very thoughtful and unlike what you normally hear. I had heard mixed reviews as well, however I think the negative info is due to two things:
1. the reputation of the old hospital
2. the ER seems to be busier than Allen

Good luck, if you need more details...let me know. We battled with this decision due to the mixed inputs, but we're very pleased with every aspect of the service.

I delivered at Presby Allen. It was okay. My son was admitted to McKinney Med Ctr it was okay. Having been mis-diagnosed before by a doctor, put things in perspective for me as far as now I realize that doctors, nurses, hospitals etc.... don't know everything I gave them credit for knowing.
Have you toured the hospital's L&D wards?
As long as you have a good doctor and have open communication with him/her I think you will have a pleasant experiernce at either place. That being said I have heard the McKinney hospital was bad. That is all I heard, I have no idea why? I know they have had two shootings in the parking lot in the last 5 years. Maybe that is where a bunch of the "bad" comes from?! Not sure. Good luck in your decision.

Hi N.!

I haven't heard anything negative about McKinney, but I have delivered and will deliver our son at Presby of Allen. My daughter is almost 4 years old, and we had a fantastic experience minus one night nurse one time. Our pediatrician had a big meeting with the head of nursing there after our experience, so I sure hope that we don't have her again at any point of our stay. Allen had a wonderful lactation consultant who kept in touch with us daily for two weeks after we were at home. Even with our one bad nurse, the rest of the staff was exceptional and met all of our needs. Good luck as you make your decision!

I didn't have my son at mckinney but my step father had a surgery there and had to go back for a second surgery because they didn't fix him the first time. He almost died and they got it right the second time. I had my child a Presbyterian in Plano and I had a wonderful experience..

Hi N., I can't answer about their Labor and Delivery but my ex hubby's wife and daughter were taken to McKinney Med. Center ER. The next day they both told me never to go there that they were just awful. Administration lost paperwork which caused hours of delays all the way to terrible problems with the doctors and nurses. We have all been to Centennial Med. Center ER many times in Frisco and have had excellent care every single time. All the best to you and your new little one to be.
