Looking for a Pro-natural Ob Who's Not Extreme "organic"--First Pregnancy, Help!

We just found out we're pregnant--Surprise!!! But we're excited, even if clueless. I was raised by a chiropractor so I'm pro-natural foods and things, but I'm definitely not an organic nut--I don't do extremes. I'm hoping someone can give me recommendations on Provo/Orem (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) ob's that are, well, gently natural, I guess. I don't know my call on natural birth yet, but I don't want someone who's first response to everything is going to be invasive. If there's an herb that'll do the trick, I'd rather take that than a mom-safe drug, you know? I'd probably prefer a woman, I think?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for your advice--seems like most everyone's voting Timpanogos! I guess we shouldn't be too surprised, but we mis-carried this week, so I'll have to wait to make the decision. Thanks everyone!

Congrats! Although you are being thrown unexpectantly into parenthood, there's no better joy!! My doctor is Wayne Young, he has delivered all 4 of my boys and I love him. In his office there is a certified nurse midwife named Heather, she is great too. I've seen her many times for visits and she is really sweet and listens well to her patients. I am pretty sure she would work with whatever method of birth you prefer. They are in Orem at the building attached to Orem Community Hospital. After attempting to be tough and do it on my own with the first one, I've thrown in the towel and gone the epidural route. Good luck with your pregnancy and the birth of your baby.

Hello! Well, I see a group of Midwives at Mt Timpanogos Women's Health Care in American Fork. Its just down the street from the AF hospital. There are about 6 of them (maybe 7) that you rotate through and all of them are excellent. If you don't feel comfortable with the midwife approach then there are also 2 doctors that work in the clinic as well. My mom has seen one of them for a long time now and really likes him. I was with them (midwives) last time I gave birth and they were wonderful. I did choose to have an epidural and they didn't mind at all. But they have a lot of choices when it comes down to it. Hipno-birthing, natural, etc. I don't know if they take Blue-cross insurance, but you could call and ask. Again. I recommend them to everyone because they are so great to listen to you and make it great experience for you. I'm expecting my second in Aug and we are definitely using them again. There office number is ###-###-####. Website = www.mtwhc.com
Hope this helps!!!

Wow! We have a lot in common. I'm also in a master's program, have a husband in school and just had my first baby, so hopefully I can be of some help. I started with an OB who I didn't know who was covered by my insurance for the first 7 months of pregnancy, and, when I asked about 'alternative birth methods' he replied, "Oh, you'll want the epideral. Any other questions?" So I immediately knew he wasn't for me. (He delivered out of Orem.) I got a generally cold feeling from him, although he had a great resume and was very competant, the bedside manner was lacking for what I wanted through my birthing experience. So...I sought out the midwives in Timpanogos (sp?) and my first appointment (at 7 months, mind you!) was GREAT! I sat there asking question after question to the midwife for about 30 minutes and got immediate answers that were warm, real and VERY reassuring about my birth plan and my options. I felt great & excited to have the baby & reassured I was in good hands. They have a few DO doctors there who are on-call but you meet with, get exams by, and deliver with the midwife unless a doctor is needed. (They are doctors of osteopathy, which are specialized in Obstretics/Gynecology so they have a fundamental training in the medical as well as the natural side of things through exercise, diet, breathing, husband-coached methods, non-medicated child birth, etc. They are on-call always along with the midwives but only come if you have an extenuating circumstance...my feeling is birth is a natural thing and it will do it's thing without force. Anyway, they don't intervene unless necessary medically for the baby & mom's safety like if baby isn't coming out and heart rate drops, etc. and a c-section is needed.) Anyway, I highly recommend them. American Fork Hospital does 30% natural deliveries, non-medicated and they are familiar with all sorts of varieties of birth plans and I felt fully supported with it. Online you can google 'birth plans' and get a generic outline where you select things and it gave me ideas what to ask the midwife about, if I didn't know what it did or why it might be important. I went completely natural with no medication and wasn't induced (he came right on the due date). My husband & I prepared with husband-coached child birth classes (Bradley Method) and it helped us mentally and physically prepare a lot, just knowing what was happening and what to expect. If you're leaning toward natural these classes are locally available and about $200 for 12 weeks of evening classes. They have midwives at Orem as well, but I'm not familiar with them or the practices they use. My midwife on call was excellent and sat through 3 grueling hours of pushing (my first baby as well) and she was helpful and supportive and encouraging, something I was assured my doctor at Orem would not have been by several of the nurses who had worked with him previously. I would've been rushed to a c-section after about an hour and wouldn't have had the experience I wanted with my new baby. After experiencing it with the midwives, I wouldn't want to go any other way!

I have used the doctors at Timpanogos Women's health center and LOVED Dr. Parker. He is exactly what you called "gently natural". He delivered both my son c-section (he was breech and there really weren't a lot of options for me) and then my daughter VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section). A lot of doctors won't even think of those much anymore. He also let me wait 10 days after my due date to go into labor naturally. Anyhow, the midwives there seemed to be wonderful as well. I have friends who used the midwives and loved them. Good luck! Oh, and they do take Blue Cross- that is what i had with my first child.

I have attended the New Beginnings Midwife Clinic in Orem for both of my children. I have had natural births with both of my children (look into Hypnobirthing, its amazing!), though in my intro meeting with them they did say that about 1/3 of their births are natural, 1/3 have an epidural, and another 1/3 have some other sort of pain relief. They are very supportive of the kind of birth you want to have and are pretty low intervention (I think their c-section rate is about 5%, compared to most doctors at 20%-30%). They are caring, always listen well, and have showed up for my births early on-- not just to catch the baby like I have heard many doctors do. I don't know if they take your insurance, as mine is different. They deliver at Orem Community Hospital which has a wonderful, relaxed environment too. Good luck, and congrats!
