2 Year Old Milestones?

My daughter will be 2 next month. And I've been told by several people that shes extremely smart and bright. But, with this being my first and only child, I'm not sure whats normal and whats not. So my question is...

What should a almost 2 year old be doing?

My daughter can count to 3 on her own, and count higher when I count with her. She can say part of her ABC's, if you ask her, her name she will say Mae Mae (her name is Kasen Mae, but she either gets called Mae Mae or Kasen), she can pretty much dress herself with little help, she puts her shoes on the right feet, and even though we've been potty training, she can't fully grasp the whole thing (And Im perfectly fine with it, I'm not pushing her by any means) she tells me when she needs to go...and she will sit on the potty, but she won't go in the potty and when we put a diaper on her, she will go and then tell me when she does it and walk to her room, and wait for me to lift her up on the changing pad. She knows a lot of animals and animal noises. She talks pretty good, she can say 2-4 word sentences.

Is what she is doing/saying normal? Should she be doing more?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank You for all the feed back.

I'm glad shes normal. And I agree, the What to Expect books...I don't care for much either. They didn't do much for me when I was pregnant and after she was born.

I guess, I will just keep doing what we've been doing.

Thank You Angie...I definately think shes a keeper :) And Jennifer, I will check out that website, thanks!!

Sounds good to me! I'm not a huge fan of the "What to Expect" books, but the "What to Expect: The Toddler Years" book has developmental milestone lists for every toddler age that go by, "should be able to," "may be able to," and "may possibly even be able to." You could probably Google it and get the same lists. Just remember though -every child is unique! NEITHER of my boys could put an article of clothing on by themselves by 2.5 (which is one of the milestones), but they could both say their ABCs, name numerous friends, point out well over 30 objects correctly, identify their colors, basic shapes, etc., and many of those are considered advanced milestones for that age. My oldest could name every animal imaginable, but my youngest isn't so great with naming animals -but modes of transportation -yes! A lot just depends on the kid!

Sounds like she is normal and doing great :) Just to give you an idea, I also have a 2 year old (turned 2 10/31) and since before she was 2 she has been talking in paragraphs, very clearly...counts to 10 (sometimes 13, i think thats because we have 13 stairs and we count them each time we go up, hehe), also put shoes and coats on and off by herself ...takes her clothes off (little stinker loves to be naked!lol) , also can sing full abc song but can't quite identify them ....and at around 23 months she started going potty here and there, but wasn't fully potty trained until 26 months.. She even amazes me sometimes with some of the things she understands... Like right around when she turned 2, she walked up to me and said "mommy my doggy not workin, it need new batteries, help me please" and she had some new batteries in her hand.. lol..

I have a 6 year old daughter and 4 month old daughter also. The 6 year old was so different, she was smart but didn't reallt talk until almost 3. She was more well behaved, but my now 2 year old is quite the wild one! lol
So they are all soooo different and you daughter sounds like she is right on target plus some! :)

I just clicked on your name to see if there was a picture of her and there is! She is absolutely beautiful!! :)

She sounds like she's doing really good. keep up whatever you're doing. never expect anything to be "normal" all children develop differently and i would like to think that all of us mothers think our child is ahead of the curve :) they are little sponges the more you repeat and demonstrate the faster they will mimic and commit to memory. its so exciting to see them grow and become little people!

Sounds to me that she is right on track and then some. As for the potty...you might try putting panties on her and see what happens. Potty training (I think) should be cold turkey...not mixing the potty training with diapers or pull-ups and panties. When mine were that age, my mom told me to train when they were dry at night consistently. Then put the panties on so she can feel what happens if she doesn't get there in time. Keep in mind that potty training is mental AND physical. She is a little young but she just might be one of those who gets it early in both departments. I hope this helps. All the best!

since she's definitely in the normal range or beyond, I wouldn't worry about it. Between birth and preschool age, these things vary a lot with different milestones taking priority for some kids - some are more phsical, some more verbal etc. Too soon to tell what they'll be like later. Just enjoy her and let her take the lead. You're doing great.

Everything you've described is great. You can go to the AAP website to find the milestones your ped will be looking for. They are broken down into categories: Gross Motar, Fine Motar, Language/Speech, Congitive and Social.

It certainly sounds like her language and speech skills are up to par, but you might feel better looking at the categories.
